I am building a vario 204 with benzine mechanics. I have the airframe complete and all i have to do it rig the flight controls and it will be time for ground runs. I notice that my 40 gearbox is a bit ratchety. Since there is no shimming? i assume this is just how it is or do i have a gear meshing problem. Just thought i should check before i run it in.

Thanks

Fill your gear box with some white lithium grease and run it. After a few hours of run time remove it from the heli and inspect it. Mine was a little tight at fist but after packing it with grease and putting a summer on it it's runs very smooth.

On your small wire shafts that the gears and couplers attach to make sure to ground some flat spots for the grub screws to set well.

One thing which is usually missed is that the two bearings which go over the shaft of the gear, are very hard to get seated in the correct location. If the first bearing is not all the way down to the gear, this will cause the ratchy feeling in the gear, because the gears are meshing too tight. I have never had this in this gearbox, if the bearings are installed properly.

Hello Vario Pilots,
it is not very difficult to asemble this gearbox.
you can made no mistakes in the gearbox.
only your shafts from the maingearbox and to the tailgear must have the right lenght.
Too long shafts will bring some presure in the gearbox and it will run ratchy and loud...
I wear the last 16 years 3 of this gearboxes in my Huey under all conditions without any problems.

Sling load 1,6 kg (Hummer) or Glider pulling up to 3,2m Wingspann and no maintenance...

Hello Vario Pilots,
about some PMs here a photo from the pinions...
These pinions are working 200h in my Huey...
The ballbearings fixed by the housings in position.
The inner ring of the ballbearing is also fixed by the pinion.
So you can not make any mistake during assemble the gearbox...
