I use Brake Parts Cleaner("Wearever" brand from Advance Auto), and occasionally laquer thinner(for really baked on stains)

I stay away from playing with antifreez even though I'm a mechanic

Believer in Weston motors!

The crock-pot on low, works well with the motor parts submerged in antifreeze. Heat it up (no need to boil), let it simmer a couple of hours, then let it all cool down.

Rinse well, reassemble using lots of oil.

Do NOT use the crock pot for cooking anything you're going to eat after doing this.

The nasty burnt-on oil residue will be gone. Carbon deposits may not be.

Yes, the motor needs to be stripped down. After rinsing well, pop the parts in your oven at 250-300 degrees for a short while to dry things out before reassembly.

-----

Alternate method that works well. Go to your grocery store, to the dishwashing liquid section. Pick up a small dark blue spray bottle of Dawn Power Dissolver.

Strip the motor down. Hose the gunky parts with the Dawn Power Dissolver. Let it all sit for 15-20 minutes. Use an old toothbrush on the exterior after the stuff's been on the parts. It doesn't take much effort, this stuff really works well. Rinse using hot water. Shake off excess water, dry the parts in your over, reassemble using lots of oil.

I take the engine apart (leave the bearings in), and use soap and water with a toothbrush. Flush it out with water, then use a hair dryer into all the openings until it dries, then use air compressor to get all the water out of the hard to reach spots, then hair dryer again followed by oiling the bearings inside the motor and done. It takes almost no time at all. For the tough stains, use easy off for about 2-5 min then the same procedure as above. No problems doing this for the last 5 years or so.

The etheleyne glycol method is fantastic. 225 degrees F for 4-6 hours and the worst engines or mufflers sparkle. Over the years I have tried every model engine cleaning product that I could find and none have worked even with hours of scrubbing.

EZ Off oven cleaner works well. Just warm the motor up a little in the oven (works for getting bearings out easily, just don't drop on the vinyl floor) and spray down with EZ Off.

EZ Off works great and in minutes, but will darken the aluminum.
