Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Pred. main gear - white dust

Boy, between work and family I haven't had time to work on this. I did manage to get a few hours on it today though. My real slowdown was taking everything apart to put the generator in. I'm having an issue installing the bracket for the generator which I may post here in the next few days. I've decided to move forward with getting the airframe together and have everything prepared for the generator. I did manage to get the basic airframe assembled today. Now I just need to line everything up and loctite all the screws. So far the gear seems good. I have just a slight amount of up/down movement but I can't see or feel any ability to rock the main gear assembly side to side (seasaw-ing on the main bearing assembly).

Looking forward to flying. Perhaps this week, I hope. I have to pull an all nighter at work tonight.

I've got the whole thing put back together. Now I just need a few hours where the wind is less than 30 mph. I hope to post some video's if I can get someone else to run a camera while I'm flying it.

I put two tanks through it today. I'm still getting some white dust off the bottom of the gear. I'm sure the clutch bearing is not rocking, the assembly feels good. I can move the main gear about 1mm up/down. The inner part of the clutch with the ring gear does not move vertically at all (of course), this is just the outer clutch assembly moving. This is where my issue is as the outer gear has no clearance from the frame when it's all the way down. You can see it's riding near the bottom part of the pinion.

anyhow I did a few auto's, flips and just horsing around. It was windy (20mph). The GV-1 showed 1650 HS, 1750 as the max in idle-2. I had the low end as rich as it could be and still start/idle.

is there anyway to raise the outer gear assembly without affecting the inner clutch/ring gear height?

You have something out of wack... Probably the lower mast bearing is pushed down... Check the upper bearing block too...i have found it 40ths from being seated...
Once all this is done...make sure the collars are loose, then put the pin thru the hub, and let it rest...Check your height..., it should be fine...Put the lower collar in, if you have up and down movement, add a shim on the bottom....If you use a split collar on the bottom, just take the slack up, and tighten...
Tighten the top split collar... go hover for a min, and re-check...

I took the top thrust bearing out, and add a radial bearing...Its near impossible to preload two thrust bearings...they just don't work good together..

Its always good to loosen the top split collar , and the bottom collar before putting the pin in..

Your welcome...Remember, your transferring more power.... Without knowing your needles, if you had a dark plug, you will probably notice the plug lighten up simply by being able to transfer all its power..You should notice faster climbs, and a more rock solid tail... The machine should also feel like its lock in much better....

I may change the lubricate of the hub later, so if the shakes start coming back, then it needs lubricating...Let me know...

I did have the mast in tight before putting the pin in the main gear. Perhaps I'll take it apart again and see if I can straighten it out. I did fly it a bit more today, lot of fun. I wish there was someone here to help me tune the engine. I have not developed an ear for it. I'm flying the main at 1.5 and the L at probably 1 3/8 or 5/16. The highest engine temp I found was about 250F. Another guy at our field said it sounded lean to him as it was bogging a bit on full throttle flips, tic-toc's and even straight up climbs (inverted as well as up right). I moved the H needle out another 1/16th but it seems to be worse confirming a rich setting.

Anyhow pulling the head off and resetting the main bearing assemblies shouldn't be a big deal. I do wonder if I'm missing something. Seems as if the frame and pinion offer a 1/4" headroom but there is no way I could move the whole assembly up because of the tail drive.

BTW, started the day off with about 5.25V with a .5A pull on my 1400ma NiCD pack, put it away with the same reading after two tanks (45 minutes ?) of flying with 9351's and a 601/9251. Really liking my Jewel generator on startup my 601 shows 4.8V. I peaked at it while spooled up and it showed 5.3V - <BORAT> VERRY NIIICCCEEE </BORAT>

Bill i haven't got a chnace to check the power with the o-ring mod.
I did notice, since you mentioned it, that the engine did sound a bit more "Lock in" while hovering, i didn't think much of it since i haven't flown it for about 2 months.

i'll get in some flight time this weekend and report back.

Are the O-rings rubber or a hard plastic. Is there a part number?

If someone has one of these O-rings can you please measure it and post the size here. You can order teflon O-Rings from this company and I think they my do the trick. MA may run out if we all start ordering.

Damn it I took my sragg out and forgot the direction. The drive gear for the tail should free wheel clockwise or counter clockwise? While holding the main gear.

Freewheel clockwise - visualize the rotor turning once the engine is shut off

From what I can see the sprag will jump up and down between the upper bearing seat and the lower oil lite bushing. I guess we want to stop the internal movemnet of the sprag. The teflon O rings will stop this movement. Is this the affect we want Bill?

Thats correct Victor55..take out all the shims at the top of the sleeve.. Make sure you check for wobble on the main shaft with the sleeve...

I have so much power transfer now, that I'm going to change the gear ratio..The Stock ratio on the Condor is 8.0, and now with the auto hub fixed, I'm having to throttle back to low to keep the same amount of rotor rpms...
The machine feels so light now, if feels like a 50..

If you haven't done the oring and sleeve mod, you are missing out!

Bill,

This might be a silly question, but does this mod do anything about the Clutch problem, or is the Engine stabilizer still recommended?

I have yet to do this mod, but if as good you say it is, I cant wait to get started!

Take Care,
