HIROBO Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > Newbie.....need help diagnosing a problem

First of all, thank you in advance to everyone who tries to help.

I noticed this problem yesterday afternoon, and have not had much time to research completely.

I have a Hirobo Sceadu 50. As I was increasing my throttle to begin a set of hovering practices, I noticed that my rotor head speed never increased even though my engine RPMs increased. I quickly shut down and begin going through inspection procedures.

I noticed no glaring issues such as breaks, loose parts, etc.etc.etc. I took the blades off and restarted and slowly and carefully watched the main gears as I slowly increased throttle speed. Everthing seemed to begin well, then I noticed a spot where the gears seemed to be spinning properly, but the rotor head RPMs had hit a point where it was no longer increasing. It almost seemed to be slowing down. It was getting dark so really couldn't spend any more time watching it.

This is not a maiden flight; there are about 40-45 flights on the engine and bird.

Tonight I will try to go through the kit instruction book and parts list to see if I can identify some likely culprits. I want to break down the gear and mast sections; but an experienced heli pilot friend has offered to help me out later in the week. However, I just can't sit and stew on this; I want to be able to have some idea of what I am up against.

If I am missing something obvious; try to be kind.. I just finished up tax season; so I obviously have not had much chance to fly or peruse RR until now.

Again, thank you in advance....

The one-way bearing or clutch are your most likely candidates . . .

I agree, I would replace the one way and check the clutch and clutch liner.

Man, I miss the eighties.

If the head isn't keeping up with the gears then the oneway bearing is the culprit. Fortunately, it is very easy to replace. You will want to order the 2500-102 One way bearing (Eagle WC version), although the original 2500-048 bearing will work as well.

To replace (or inspect), pop off the links from the bottom of the swashplate and remove the lower Jesus bolt. Then pull the mainshaft from the heli. You should then be able to remove one of the brass washers from the oneway housing and remove the old oneway bearing. They tend to be stiff in the housing if you didn't grease the outside of the bearing, so it might take some coaxing. When you install the new bearing, make sure it is the correct way up. It's also a good practice to apply grease to the outside of the bearing (between the bearing and housing). Lube the inside of the bearing with Automatic Transmission Fluid.

There is a very good bet that your existing bearing has a crack in the outer metal casing. This is the typical failure mode, which shows up on the 50-class helis after a few years of normal flying or a few months of abuse.

I am 110% sure your one-way bearing has gone bad. Take it out from your main gear and check. You should see some hairline crack with careful inspection.

Also, if you find that the oneway has gone south and you don't mind the extra dollars, there is an updated unit availabe, it actually replaces your existing autorotation hub if i'm not mistaken.

The parts number is 0412-290. It's not cheap, i think it's almost 200$ but from what i hear they are bulletproof.
Plus it looks fantastic

imo though, i think that the "older" type oneway will get you really far. Like Leif said, you could go with the Eagle WC type bearing, i think it's approx. 20$

Hope you get it working again, keep us posted.
