Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > fuel pump

hi there
can anyone tell me the lowest voltage a fuel pump will start to run.
to start pumping fuel. the pump is a mth hausl zp280 28w for my wren mw54 turbine, it works ok with a 1.5 volt AA battery thats the
lowest voltage i had to try it. i am useing a orbit jetronic ecu.
i turn on transmitter then heli then ecu. to prime turbine i press
the set key on the engine data terminal which opens valve and let pump run very slow for about 1 second. per press, which i can see the fuel moveing in the clear tube,

my problem is when i prime it works ok and then next time it dont

so is the pump stoping in a place where the low voltage wont let it start again ,

i am wondering if its my pump or the ecu which is not working right,

when it wont prime, i unplug the pump from ecu and connect a 1.5 battery to it, and run the pump it works ok, then i plug back in to ecu, then press set button to prime, and it works ok again,

i have no problem when the turbine is running
just this prime problem when i try to start,

many thanks to all in advance cheers kim johns

I have a turbine with some years that as that "prime" function. It is only possible to prime one time for each time we turn the ECU ON to avoid over priming.
Maybe that is what is happening to you.

can i ask

Why do you need to prime the fuel system ?

Matt

I bought my Mother-in-law a chair for xmas, but she wouldn't plug it in

I believe that this function was available because when turbines where firts used, we didn't use header tanks and used to empty the main tank. When refuelling, we use to prime so the air at the peaking line could be out.

Thats my guess.

Kim,
your fuel pump should work down to 0.7 to 0.8V with no problem.
with the orbit ecu you can only prime when the "RUN" sign is on in the hand display unit (edt). Double check the safety switch is not in the "stop" position. You should be able to prime as often as you like, many times in succession if necessary.
However I have had a few of these pumps that are tight and sometimes more than 1 volt is needed to start it.

hi phill
i had the safety switch every time to do the prime,
when i first ran the turbine the fs set at 0.6v i never had a this problem, it started this problem about two weeks ago, went down to the feild done a prime. turbine started had a ten mins flight all ok
half hour later went to start turbine done two primes went for a start no go, so done two more primes went to start but still no go,
so took fuel pipe out of festo then press the set button to prime
but no fuel was coming from the pump. so with the pipe off. put thottle full and back the turbine went for a start has it did the fuel started coming from the pump so i knew the pump was working,
so when i went home i put a 1.5v battery to see if it was working
with a low voltage and it did, so i went in to the set up and put the fs up to o.8v then i turn it all on press the set button and it worked ok, as i done the fs volts i put the fuel pipe in a jar has i turn the fs from 0.6 to 0.8 the fuel flow was a bit faster,
when you get to the fs mode you get a buzzing noise then after a few seconds the buzzing noise get a pulse then back to the buzzing noise the pulse is about every 4/5 seccnds when it do the pulse the fuel skeets a bit faster than when it doing the buzzing,

i know phill you got the orbit ecu in your xlv, so when you go in to the settings and get to fs do your ecu make the buzzing and then
the pulse,
this is why i am wondering if its the ecu or the pump

many thanks kim

I have never had an Orbit ECU go wrong and I have four of them. However I have had several pumps pack up so I would suspect that first, try swaping it with another one.

Kim,

I still don't understand why you need to prime. I run a Wren with the standard FADEC and I never need to prime to start it. I still use Powermax gas first, but the pump doesn't need to be primed. In fact the only time I've needed to prime a pump is when I ran totally out of fuel doing a timer test. You have a pretty good pump. If you suspect a bad pump try one of these. I have the 200b model and I see they have a 200C out.

Here is the link.

Why do you need to prime the pump the start?
