Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Cheap electronic ignition conversion

I purchased a cheap CDI system to convert a glow engine to spark ignition , just to have a play . I tried it out today on a Petrol engine that I have in a fixed wing model and it works fine .
I thought that I would post a link just incase any of you would like to convert their gassers over to electronic ignition .
The CDI and sensor (also available from the same site) came to just £20.01 including delivery !

Seems interesting. The user comments on that site are all very positive.

However, it needs its own power supply? I love my gasser's independence from any exterior power sources (including the need to charge Rx batteries), so I'm not sure I'd use this just for the electronic conversion's sake.

Not all people want the same things, however, so I guess there is a good market for the device. Thanks for sharing.

All the reviews are totally positive, that give me some pause.. That and the fact that one guy bought 3 without even checking first makes me think that the reviews are abit dodgy..

Just my 2c..
I'm a bit more cautious after buying a BME90 conversion..

I like the braided HT lead. The rest of the unit looks well made too. I didn't see what power supply it needs?

Thanks for posting

CDi will make your engine run smooth, but the magneto does a fine job, since we are running a constant speed...
Most of these units because of the input voltage will require a reg...that plus a battery is just a little much for me..

Why they don't go ahead and make the input voltage to the 7.4 range, then you can have a small lipo without a regulator, then, it will be worth it ...
3W engines in Germany does this, but for their engine only...Maybe they will sell it separately?

4 cell will work fine, its just the batteries are heavy, when you compare the net gain with the magneto ...

By all means, if your not concern with weight, then great...

I have a engine setup that way now, just to keep it simple myself

A couple silicon diode's in series would give you a 1.4V drop.
Something like an 1N5400 - good for 3 amps...

I agree with Bill. Only benifit would be a smoother idle and easier starting. Probably won't do anything for power.

The only reason that I purchased one really was to convert a glow engine to spark ignition . I can get a spark plug with the same thread as a glow plug , so that will make the conversion easier .

What about weight savings? Any to be found with this system?

I doubt it but I can weigh the unit for you if you like .

It weighs 103 grams (3 5/8 oz) . The only thing that might be an issue is that it has a plastic case , not ideal for shielding .

It may well be painted on the inside with conductive metalic paint for EMI shielding.

Is it fully potted, or just in a hollow plastic case?
(e.g., if you tap it with your finger does it sound/feel hollow or firm and solid?)

It feels quite solid , except for the base . It could be partially potted finishing before the base , but it doesn't seem heavy enough for that to be the case .
