Ok, what is up with the main gears? They seem to stip far to easy.
I have now replaced 3 mains during a short period. The gear mesh has been perfect, since I have paid alot of attention from the first strip.

How many of you have had this issue?

A loose pinion may be the cause. I had problems with gear stripping and found that the pinion will loosen in just a few flights causing it to wobble, I was using red locktite.

After JB Welding my pinion into the bearing, problem gone.

I stripped my first gear after 10 flights. I suspect the loose pinion, which was really the starter hex bolt come off.

Yes, its the white helical gears. And the pinion is JB welded to the bearing, no wooble. I am starting to belive that these white gears are of poor or uneven quality. I just heard from another guy that also stripped his gear. My last gear was on the tight side, just to prevent stipping it.

Someone said that the Raptor main fits this machine, but this would be a "downgrade" from helical and not what i would like.

I did hovever change the engine from a TT Redline to a OS Hyper, just to check the diffrence.

Ok, I got a solution. Might have been my fault anyway, durig the change of engine´s.

What was the solution ?

Stock Helical gear seems to hold up perfect for me under hard 3D flying.

I have just built my third X-50 and am also having a few problems with the main gears...I have striped 2 in 2 flights...Had NO issues whatsoever with the previous two helis. I have done the gear meshing as per the manual on all four gears and obviously paid close attention on the latest one after the first striped. I will pull the pinion out and check it over. Any other advice?? TomViper what was your solution??

One of the boys at the club stripped his main yesterday as well, but he admitted that the mesh was probably on the loose side.

If the stop screw that holds the starter hex comes loose. Then the starter shaft starts to slip up and down. This is enough for the pinion/clutch bell to be allowed som play which in its turn will result in stripped gear. You can tell by looking at the clutch bell, if it has a strange forward tilted angel, your gears will strip next flight for sure.

Solution: loctite the stopscrew firmly an make sure there is no axial play on the starter shaft. Also check the 4 bolts holding the pionion/clutch bell/starter assy that they are firmly tightened and loctited.

The gear play with helical gear should be tighter than straight gears.

We have Helical main gears stripped problems before too. Shady's solution just straight to the point to solve it out!!

The helical main gear must be tigher than straight gear and I suggest to make it "very tight"!! After the 1st flight, you will find there are some white ashes grinded out. Clean it out and the main gear will turn smoothly w/o strip the main gear.

How tight do you guys have your pinions? i used the piece of paper method. When I do up the bearing block up, there is no play, take the piece of paper out, and there is a little play, maybe about a millimeters worth. too much?? I tried to do up tighter then that once and the gear mesh was grinding.

Make sure you set it on the high spot of the gear too. (Not that i should be commenting.)

I install it very tight without any gap to the pinion. You may find it hard to turn. Just let the main gear grinding in the 1st flight.

Hey guys, my main gear has now ground in after a few flights, tho now it seems quite loose indeed, there is just a little more then a piece of papers width of play. Is it best to retighten it? or just leave it?

This thing has some serious balls!
