RJX Hobby Hurrican 50 - Xtreme 50 > Xtreme 50 and Logitech 6100 problem

Well i finally got the exreme finished today and set out for her maiden flight. Every thing was good....no blade tracking needed....no trim and all seemed fine. Engine was really rich like it should be since it is brand new. Anyway i noticed a SLIGHT wag in the tail at first and then after about 30 seconds the wag started amplifying itself until it ended up in a VIOLENT tail wag during a hover. This 6100 is confusing the crap out of me and i know it shouldnt be. The gain is at 38%. What all would cause this to happen?? Im 99% sure my tail is smooth with no sticky spots. How far out should the ball on the horn be???? I am using a Futaba Heavy Duty servo horn and im on the second hole from center (which is out quite abit. Could this be it??? move it closer?? I used a bigger one because i needed more throw to get to my mechanical limits just before binding. Maybe its too much?
All i know is after i about pooped my pants when it did this i shut it down and put it up till i sort this out. The few seconds in hover that was good felt ROCK SOLID so i dont want to dump her right off the bat trying to fight the gyro.

Any suggestions??

Wes

I used to run the 6100 on my Xtreme 50 before I switched to the Spartan DS760. I will try to help you as best as I can.

What are all the settings on the gyro? I ran it in 3D mode, with about 8-10% smoothness, and set on high performance.

I had the ball on the servo at 17mm. This gave full throw mechanically. Make sure there is no binding anywhere. With the linkage disconnected from the servo, the tail rod and the slider on the tail shaft should be very smooth. Make sure your belt is tight enough. I have my belt set so that there is about 1/8" of movement when you push on it inside the frame. The links should all be smooth too. They should feel fairly loose but w/o any play.

Wes,

I can check in the morning because I have a 6100 on our RJX Hurrican demo machine, I'm pretty sure I'm 13mm out on the ball but I have so 401's, 611's and the 6100 so I need to verify.

The biggest thing you need to make sure is that you set the 6100 up mechanically out of HH mode, put the gyro in rate mode and get it setup to hold when bringing it into a hover, then swich it into HH and it should lock in with no problems.

What radio are you using?

I would appreciate any help i can get!! I didnt fight with it too long. I have it set on 3D, standard performance (for now till its dialed in, in rate mode) and smoothness is at 8% i believe. This is a fairly simple gyro to set up but i just cant figure out what made it wag so violently.
Oh and i am using a JR 10x radio with a AR7000 reciever

I used a 6100 on my X50 and loved it! Make sure your engine is running smooth, not too rich, not too lean of coarse. Make sure to set it up in rate mode, mechanically adjust the TR pushrod for a correct hover trim. I used two layers of 3M gray sticky tape for mounting, or stock pad. Set gyro for highest performance, smooth control 7%, 3d mode, all pushrods smooth, start with a lower gain setting, around 30%, servo arm at 15mm. I really like this gyro, getting ready to try a Spartan next heli.

I also forgot too mention that I ran about 35% gain and the tail would not blow out nor did I have any wag. I would change the performance to "High".

You will love the Spartan. I switched from the 6100 to the Spartan DS760 on my Xtreme 50 and I love it.

I run a 6100 on my Xtreme as well, and never had this happen.

So far seems you got pretty good advice, i will follow up with your findings in this thread.

Another suggestion i got was the location of the amp/gyro box. i have it on the front top plate above the servo for the tail. The suggestion was that the RF noise from servo will screw with the amp box and cause this. One said he had to relocate the box to the rear. Sound feasible???????

I would move the 6100 to the back. I had a similar problem with another gyro on a different heli. As soon as I made a mount for the rear, my issue went away.

I had my 6100 mounted on the back gyro plate on my X50 too. That is where I also have the Spartan DS760 mounted. This seems to be the ideal location with a rigid frame like the X50 has.

The last i had this problem was with a new engine running too rich, choking itself every other stroke. That kicked the tail around which appeared like gyro problem.
