Aerobatic FAI F3C Contest > Can someone explain what F3C and FAI are?

I'm a bit confused here. I understand that they are composed of precision maneuvers but beyond that I've no clue!

The correct term is actually FAI-F3C.

FAI is the abbreviation for the organization that governs international aviation competition and records. The organization is a cheese-eating, surrender monkey outfit so I'm afraid I'd kill the spelling. Someone else will have to do it.

F3C is the FAI classification code for the rules that govern radio control helicopters.

The US has proberly the largest r/c population, why don't we have our own organisation to compete with FAI , and more so to cater for our needs

Everywhere u go , its FAI this and FAI that

I thought you already had your own organisation. When I read the reports of US contests, you seem to use a variety of classes that are specific to the USA.

As it's a world governing body, why set up another one? Is there a problem competing with the rest of the world royraf?

FAI F3C

I will try to explain this...

FAI is a governing body for aeronautics sports worldwide. It concerns not only radio controlled aeronautics but also other activities like real aircraft sports.

F3C is a classification amongst the FAI rule book for radio controlled helicopter contests, which is the rule to follow for radio controlled helicopter contests in bigger competitions like national championships, continental championships and world championship. At this moment F3C is the only FAI classification for radio controlled helicopter contests, but there are some plans to instill another 3D like radio controlled helicopter contests, and if that materialise later, there would be another classification for radio controlled helicopters.

In the States, its AMA who govern model aeronautics sports. AMA have their own set of rules for some contests, but for worldwide level competition they follow the rules of FAI.

i think japan is really big on F3C. i wonder why U.S. lacks F3C and favors 3D more.

F3C vs 3D

My personal opinion....

3D flying is very stunning to the audience. As a regular audience, seeing an inverted flying heli sure is more interesting than seeing a helicopter hovering in the square with flags. I actually heard people comment that pilot who could invert flying their heli have much better skills than the guy who is fighting to hold the heli on top of the flag...very discouraging to a pilot who just happen to come back from the square...

I think the States, being a country that always cherish freedom, 3D is chosen by many pilots because there is no bound rules like F3C, at least 3D does not need to bind the pilot to fly inside the square with flags....However, there are many good F3C pilots from the States too, and the States team have always been a top contender for the teams competition for World Champs.

I don't want to say 3D or F3C is better here. Its just a matter of choice and personal opinion, but for the record, I am a F3C pilot.

At this moment F3C is the only FAI classification for radio controlled helicopter contests

Actually not really. There is another competition class called Artistic Aerobatics and that is freestyle flying to music. In fact Artistic Aerobatics (AA in short) is the only recognized World class to be flown at World Air Games.
The 3D Masters in England include one AA round.

hmmm

Federation aeronautique internationale....

Probably another french organisation that wants to control sport in some way?

If F3C is pattern flying perhaps 3D got its name from the next step... ie F3D?

Its no more 3 dimensional than pattern flying...

just my weird kinda logic after a bottle of red wine...
