Well there was a Brazilian guy at the field today with a radar gun. He wanted to take the speed of my gasser as the fast descent auto the day before looked really fast and scary to him. I did some runs and here is what I got:

A full down collective auto (-10 degrees of pitch) comes in at 63mph or about 92fps.

A full power climbout goes up at 27mph or 40fps.

A -1 degree slow descent floating auto comes in at about 17mph or 25fps.

Flying around normally doing my routine is about 30mph or 44fps.

A high speed pass comes in at 75mph or 110fps.

These were taken with my 1005 gasser, with SAB 710mm blades, a hanson G26, Minair rear 4030 zimmerman style muffler and Minair round car-style aircleaner.

Thought you guys might find this of interest.

was that with a slight dive or just boogie-ing down the flight line?

I bought one of the cheap $20 hot-wheels radar guns but so far I haven't gotten it to work

A few years ago I strapped my brother-inlaw's GPS unit on the top of an airplane. That indicated ~85mph on a dive. I thought that was pretty cool.

Did my first auto's with my Predator this weekend - pretty cool.

Wow 75 mph !

Man that's really humping along ! I really need to work on my set up as I know what 75mph looks like, and mine is no where near that speed " maybe 40 mph to 50mph , even with near full collective +9 and nose leaning down.

Like to see the info Raja as it really gives a good baseline, thanx.

Answers to questions

75mph is without much of a dive, probably about a 100 foot drop total and I flew far away and over the trees, and when I was hauling back and passed the trees I dropped it to about 20 feet over the runway.

Someone asked me in a PM if it overspeeds during the vertical descent. The answer is that no because I hit throttle hold at about 500 feet or so and then just dropped the collective to the floor and let it pickup speed on the way down. The engine is at idle all the way. I'd bet if I left it at power in idle up and dropped the collective to the floor (-10 degrees), it would definately overspeed.

Yes, very interesting Raja

I've often wondered about the speed that build's up when you pull out of a high auto. I do not claim anything like the figures you have recorded here but the ground speed we get if we descend downwind can be a bit hairy to witness for the unnacustomed

Raja,

Good to know numbers. We dont really have anything to compare anyones gasser to another. We can say wow 'Bobs' gasser pulls like a tank but does it? Gears blades and other factors very.

Any gas guys going to ircha this year? I am thinking this year or next making a trip out.

Radar gun

Cody, if you can get a radar gun then we can compare your 1005 to mine. Coming in at full negative pitch that things is fast!!! I had to so it so its close in and vertical to get an accurate reading. Very impressive to the crowd, they were cheering!

I may go to IRCHA this year. Not set in stone yet as I still have Hurlock, MHA, SMRCHA, Crow Island, and Father's day FF to go to all before that!

yea. If you give more than -6 my sabs seem to screem in popping. Always fun to do those. I bought a set of the TST's. Going to give them a try.
