e-Gaui Hurricane 200 & 550 - EP100 > Hurricane 550 Latest Hurricane 550 Issues

Hey guys.

I was just starting think about getting one of these cool Gaui Hurricane 500's as my second heli I've only been flying for about 3 months (first is a mini-Titan).

Just yesterday however I was reading about some tail problems that were severe enough to crash the heli's. I don't want to buy one if one of the OEM/Stock parts are not up to the task and require replacement/upgraded stuff just to fly without worry of losing the heli. I think some were swapping out the whole tail for the Align 600 tail.

I also want to know what motor is recommended for basic flight (no 3D) using 2 3s 2200mAh packs. I've heard/read a whole range from 3 minutes to 8 minutes. I think the 3 minute reports are guys flying 3D though. I'd like to get at least 8-10 minutes using the batteries I have now.

So...

#1 Is the stock H550 ready for "prime time" yet with no issues?

#2 What motor do you recommend for longest non-3D flight using (2) 3S 2200mAh Li-Po's?

#3 How much flight time can I expect with that motor and my 2200's ?

If the answer to #1 is "not ready/has issues" then EXACTLY what would I need to do to fix the issues without going "custom/expensive"?

I was assuming I'd go with 500-525mm main blades but not sure if woodies or CF?

Any other insight is greatly welcome.

Thanks for your input with this!

The tail problems I have heard of have been from overtightening blade screws and running the headspeed up too far and destroying the tail from too high rpm's. I fly the stock motor and it is good for mild 3d and sport flying. I would definitely get the cf blades 500mm and the short tail boom. CF's don't bog the motor on hard climb outs like the woodies did and they have an awesome reaction time as far as pitch response goes.It is very tail heavy with the stock boom. For what it is worth this is one well built heli imo. I have had 2 and a few small infractions with the ground and it is very cheap and easy to repair. I use fp 2500 packs on mine and have the esc set for high voltage cut out and I get around 8-10 minutes of normal flight.

I meant to do that!!!

As stated above the tail problems are when you get over 2000 rpms HS.

The 550 is a great heli in stock form and the only must have upgrade is the cnc elevator arm. The plastic one is just too flimsy.

If you buy one without the stock motor everyone is having very good results with the Z20 or Tanic motors. they work very well with 2200 packs PROVIDED they are 22c or better. You will most likely burn up 18c packs, especially with a stock Guai motor...

Check out Helifreak it has a very large 550 forum and many posts that you can review.

All in all most everyone seems really pleased with the performance of the heli.

I liked my stock plastic one so much a I got the CF model and a total metal head set up as I can see i'll be flying this heli for years to come.

It's cheap to repair and there are plenty of on-line HS's for parts support.

There are many good helis....I can only comment on this one.

You can't go wrong with a 550 for the $$

I'm flying a Hurricane 550 & it's stock with the exception of the metal elevator arm and a Z20A-980 TonicX motor for sport flying (14t pinion). My batteries are two, Thunder Power three cell, 11.1 volts, 2200 mAh's at 25C. With the Z20A motor I get from 6 to 8 minutes of flying (hovering, circuits & circles). I've measured my main rotor speed and its 1800 rpm. The only other mod I've done is to use Raptor ball links.
The Z20A brushless motor is slightly warm as are my packs after 6 to 8 minutes. Hope this helps.

Thanks bclong211, Mike, and Mark.

The batteries I have are that I want to use are:

(3) Thunder Power eXtreme V2 25C 2200mAh and
(3) Cellpro Revolectrix 25C 2200mAh

I realise this will leave me with a mis-matched 3rd split pack so I may buy 1 more of each so I don't have to mix the TP and CP-R.

I am new so no 3D for me but I do like to whip the heli around a bit and have the power to pull me out of a bad situation.

I had a control arm go out (weak point) on my mini-Titan and upgraded it to metal so I guess the H550 has a similar trait.

I will also plan on the Raptor ball links (exactly which links do you swap out Mark?

I hear that the stock Gaui motor/ESC runs hot (I live in Chicagoland) and 95-100 degees is just around the corner. I think that Z20 motor is very popular (Does it stay cooler than the Tanic?)

What model/amp CC ESC (needs to stay really cool) would you recommend? I was thinking about the either the CC Phoenix 60 or 80 (25v models) unless you recommend the HV Phoenix 50v model.

As for the heli, I don't know if I should get:

- CF frame/plastic head version
or
- XES Pro SE available only at readyheli.com

or just the stock EP kit

I really like my plastic/stock mini-Titan so maybe I should just get the stock plastic frame/head kit. The SE from readyheli is cool though.

THANKS A LOT GUYS!!! I REALLY appreciate your input.

for 2 packs in series;

I would recommand labeling the packs in pairs (set a, b etc) so the packs get the same age and wear. This will also help you with serial charging and balancing across the two packs.

We have been flying the plastic frame XES version without any issues. The CF version has a wider 2nd gear opening so you can change the gear ratio easily to suit other motors.

If you go with the basic stock (recommanded for the packs you intend to use), make sure that you have an updated motor block with the bearing in the motor block for the 2nd stage shaft.

Hi Dave,
Check out the Finless video for ball link replacements. The Raptor links just give you more thread contact on the pushrods and better adjustibility.

Thanks red_z06 and Mark.

I am planning on using the Z20-980 motor for now with the possibility of future upgrade to a Scorpion or JGF motor. Will the stock plastic frame accept those? I do really like the CF frame though :-)

Also, if I order from Helidirect or readyheli.com will they be selling the newest version "updated motor block with the bearing in the motor block for the 2nd stage shaft" ?

I heard the latest versions are put together slightly better also.

I will make note to change the ball links. It's funny because I had (was advised) to change my stock Thunder Tiger mini-titan ball links to Align links on my swash servos as they are much stronger/beefier.
