Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > How low nitro percent can you actually fly on

I heard a guy in one of the posts talk about using CP 10% and that it would fly for 25 minutes. Why would using less nitro up the duration time? How low can you actually fly? What effects does it have?

You normally run an engine much leaner on the low nitro fuel than you would on 30% for example. This would explain the longer run times.

Keep in mind the motors we use require the fuel (and oil in the fuel )to carry away the heat of the combustion process. Nitro produces a lot of heat and requires a richer needle to keep the engine temperature reasonable without detonating. Ask the boy's in Europe who run FAI or 5% nitro fuel about how critical needle valve settings get at these low percentages, one or two clicks usually means the difference between rich and lean. Personally I'm not about to give up my 30% for some fuel economy, all that nitro and high oil content makes my engines very happy indeed!!

Needle settings were not really that critical with low or no Nitro when I was flying in Germany as the engines timing and compression were designed to work at these nitro percentages.
If that is the case today then I guess it might be that the manufacturers are trying to cover both markets with the same engine which at best would be a compromise.
I have 2 Rossi engines (61 size) that I brought with me from Germany and even that they were designed to spin at 28000 rpm you can watch the propeller blades turn and see the actual blades on no Nitro or 5%.
It takes around a 1/4 of a turn to makes any difference in the engine.
But as I said, they were specifically designed for straight fuel.

My Webra 50`s will run on ZERO nitro, made to do it and run fine on it.

Nitro does indeed effect flying time. The whole reason for using nitro is when nitro burns it releases oxygen. With more oxygen in the combustion chamber we can add more fuel, and more fuel means more power. Same concept as a turbocharger, force more air into the chamber and it can burn more fuel, therefore, more power. An equivalent size engine set up for racing using 70% nitro will get about 15 seconds/oz of fuel.
