Scale Model RC Helicopters > Great Way to Get A Fast "Scale Fix"

While waiting to get everything together to start a build on a Hirobo Super Cobra, I needed to quench my desire to build and fly something scale. My Rappy was sitting there and I thought why not make it an Ecureuil? The Thunder Tiger Ecureuil body has intrigued me since they introduced it a few months back, so I picked one up. The fuselage is well built and the paint job is top notch. The only problem I encountered was that my Hatori JK Special was a tad bit too long so luckily I still had the stock pipe which came with my Raptor SE kit and it fit nicely. In a couple of nights work you can be up and flying. Just thought I would recommend this kit to anyone who wants a quick nice intro to Scale flying.

Thanks Jim! I look forward to checking out your Bell 222 build. Knowing your talent for building and attention to detail, it will be one nice Heli.

Thanks dude, it is definitely fun and challenging so far I will be flying the Evo mechanics this weekend - they look a little funny with the scale muffler on them, hehe.

Hey BrentC,

Good Looking! Make sure you check out your twin (my own Eurocopter) flying here in Southern California:

Also check out my gallery to see the still photos of heli. One thing you may want to look at is zebra stripping the blades. Really adds to the scale appearance. Here is a link to the nav lights I installed:

And here are some pictures of the actual helicopter used to model this fuselage.

I also forgot to mention that I was born and raised on the ski slopes of Northern Utah. In fact that is how I met my wife (I was a ski instructor at Sundance). Skiing is near and dear to my heart so I fabricated the Heli Ski basket that you see attached. My next piece I am working on is attaching the canopy via 'rare earth magnets' and fabricating a 'winch' system much like the real heli.

Thanks for the kind words! It's easy to look good when someone else does the painting for me
Gadgetdude, that is one nice Ecureuil! I love your light set up and the basket.Did you make the basket yourself? Thanks for the photos of the full scale Ecureuil, that will help out with more planned additions to the body. Also where did you find your wire cutters and which lighting kit did you go with? I lost one of my wiper blades flying yesterday, I thought that I had it pretty well secured. The Thunder Tiger Decoration Set (PV6041) which includes the wipers doesn't look like it is available yet. Will have to look for another source.
We are still skiing here in Utah, we got 8" on Thursday at Snowbird.
Looks like we can go till June this year. Good year for snow.
Thanks again,
BrentC

One of our club members bought one of these fuselages, and brought his Rappy out with it installed today. He's not yet into forward flight, but he hovered it around, and it looked great.

I'd had a bad day, wrecked my P-51 with a bad landing, and wasn't much in the mood to fly again. He shouted over to me to come and fly his Ecureil, as he wanted to actually see it flying as opposed to hovering. Reluctantly, I figured I'd give him his wish.

I definitely felt the extra weight, and the extra surface area sure catches the wind well. Even so, the visibility and presentation of this fuselage is very nice, and I enjoyed taking it around for a nice scale-like flight around our pattern.

I have a Century 30 size Airwolf fuse laying around, waiting for a 30 size heli to drop in it, and I think I truly have the scale bug now...I HAVE to get a heli in that fuse!

Looks great BrentC! Mine is also almost done. I'm starting to install the scale lights.

Gadgetdude how was it to install the Nav lights in the horizontal wing near the tail?? How did you do it?? I've been eyeing that up now for a couple days on how I want to do it. Any tips you have would be great!

The lights in the rear horizontal fin were extremely easy. The whole fin is hollow. All I did was drill tiny holes in each side where the lights would be. Then i drilled a hole in the center of the fin for the wires to come out and down the tail rod. You will figure it out.

For the rear fin, it is also hollow. Very easy. As for the lights I used see the following thread:

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t420981p1/

They are controlled my the 'mini flash controller' from DIYRC.com. As you will see from all the posts from the above string, it works GREAT!

BRENTC

Thanks. The basket I made from scratch from plastic pieces you can buy at your LHS. Really was very easy. The wire cutters, same thing. I scratch built those out of cardboard I matched the paint by using Testers model paint and mixing black and red. I am also building a Bell 222 that you can see in my gallery and I made those wire cutters using the plastic sheets like I mentioned above. Turned out better. What I do is find real photos from www.airliner.net, then I model them from there.

Although I miss the skiing, I don't miss the weather that goes with it Although down here today it was 97 which was a little too warm
