Scale Model RC Helicopters > Schweitzer's (JR's and Century's)

Considering one of the 30 size Schweitzer kits. The Century ship cost about $ 300 and the JR about $ 400 (and it has CCPM). Wondering if anyone has any experience with both (is one a lot better than the other ?). Does the CCPM provide a more scale appearance ? Thanks. Bob

S-300

The CCPM of the JR 30 does not contribute to ists scale appearance and the control of both is very good. But the Century one is a lot lighter so it autos very well and has a better power to weight ratio.

MHT magazine did a review of all the 30 size versions of the scwizer and found the Century to be the best -great flyer with a very scale painted fiberglass canopy, tanks and fin set. The JR 30 uses molded plastic bits that (in order to accomodate the tail rotor pulley case) does not look at all scale. Ditto for their plastic fuel tanks. And the opening and closing doors of the Century unit is a hit were ever I take it.

The JR 60 size is painted fiberglass and quite scale looking, but for the price of these scale bits and the cost of the Ergo mechanics to go with it you will be at well over $1100.00

The Century 30 size Schweizer 300 is a very inexpensive and easy build way to get a great entry level, great looking, great flying scale model.

It is difficult for me to compare jr.as I don't own one, I do own and fly a Schweitzer 300 from century helicopters for the last year l'm very impressed with it. The local helicopter school in my city uses the Schweitzer 300 as a training helicopter, I was able to go up and take pictures and then compare it with the century helicopter. The instructors from the school were very impressed with the scale appearance and the way it flew. Charles

JR 300 (60 size)

I'm currently building a JR Schweitzer 60 size if anybody would like any info on it. I've made some modifications and I'm working on an interior. I hope to have some pic's in the next week or so. Thanks! Mark

Century Vs JR

I am an impartial party in all of this... I have seen the JR and the Century Schweizer The JR CCPM 30 has nice detail, but is made of a blow mold plastic....sorta chince. The JR 60 has more detail and is also nice to look at. But like always... I save the best for last. The Century is much more scale-like than the JR 30&60, has decals, a fiberglass yellow gelcoated canopy and has openable doors. That's the one I fly and I'm stickin' with it!!

Century Vs JR (they both loose)

None of the three (JR 30, 60, and Century) are very scale like overall. If you really want scale like then go with the Hirobo or the new Vario. I owned a Hirobo one but got rid of it because I wanted something bigger and there is no room in the Hirobo for an interior. Also, the Hirobo cabin is a very bad mold (its all lexan). I've talked this over with Jeff Green at Altech and he agreed that Hirobo could have done a much better job with the mold. Infact, Century has an excellent cabin with the opening doors (its fiberglass made by FunKey and is of excellent quality). It's also a perfect fit for the Hirobo 300. I know this because I purchased one to use on my Hirobo before I sold it. The ultimate one for overall scale is the Vario one but your looking at over $2600 when it's all said and done.

I have a JR Ergo 30SS also, Over 20+ gallons through it and only had to replace the clutch, the oneway bearing went bad and I couldnt start the engine. Other than that no problems, it's an excellent heli.

Hirobo

Bob,
Have you considered the Hirobo 30 size Schwiezer 300? The scale is probably the best in the 30 size catagory. The mechanics are Hirobo quality and very smooth. Check it out against the JR and Century. I think you would be impressed.

<<...MHT did a review...and found the Century to be the best...>>

Hmmm... interesting statement; and news to me.

I did the JR Schweitzer review, and Mike did the Century. Neither of us flew (or even looked at) the other machine.

I never read his review, so I have no clue what he said. But I find it difficult to believe that he said the Century was "the best", without at least asking what I thought of the Century. As it is, the Hawk is one 30 size machine I have no experience with. So, other than wondering about the numerous stories of difficulties in dealing with Century one hears, I have no opinion one way or another.

I can tell you that the JR is an excellent little helicopter. As has been mentioned, it is stand-WAY-off scale, so if you're looking for realism you're probably better off with something else.

Anyway, my curiousity is aroused. I'll dig out that issue when I get home and see what Mike had to say.

Hirobo Schweitzer

T. Green, I actually did not know that Hirobo made a Schweitzer. I will check it out. I plan on deciding (and perhaps purchasing a machine) at the WRAM Show. Will Hirobo be there this year ? Thanks. Bob

Hey Bob ....You bet ...it is my understanding that they have made plans to attend the show. I'm a Hirobo field rep. Should you need additional information, please let me know and I can assist you as necessary. I had a Schweizer 300 Hirobo kit and wa quite impressed with the kit quality. I thought the scale quality was far better than others on the market. The canopy, however is lexan and could use some better design. There are some aftermarket fiberglass canopy's that will fit and enhance the quality. Let me know if you have other questions. If you forward me your email, I'll forward you some pics of the kit that I had with the aftermarket canopy.
Regards,
T. Green

As I suspected, I didn't find, anywhere in Mike's article, where he said the Century is "the best". I did see where he noted that several improvements were made to the Hawk III mechanics, and also where the Hirobo kit seems to be the truest "to-scale" of the various offerings.

One other thing I remember about Century; they are the guys who brought us the Ninja...
