Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > PHT-3 starter o-ring

Hello gentlemen,

After my last flight, the cool down process sounded frightening. I suspected the o-ring, so I took out the starter to have a look. I have never seen the starter o-ring in question so I’m wondering if the o-ring has a round profile when new? If so, this one looks like it might be due for replacement. My PHT3 #0732 V5.10E with kerostart has 9 hours TT with 52 starts. The bendix moves freely on the shaft.

Regards,
Tommy

When my PHT 3 started to make an odd noise during the cool down phase, I replaced the O ring and the noise stopped. I had approx 10hrs run time on the turbine.

Oh **** ! this is going to be expensive?

Hi

If the sound you could hear was like metal grinding on metal then the O ring has worn, they do wear out....

I have been using the harder O ring that JETCAT came out with for the SPH5, it is a harder rubber...

I replaced over a year ago and have had no problems since...

They do compress into the rim of the starter and will normally be wrecked getting them out..

There is a couple of JETCAT users that have found a way of getting them out carefully and then turning them over re using them.

I have found it easier to just cut the old one and put in a new one...

Here is what the O ring looks like prior to be fitted and used

I forgot to add,

you can also see if it has worn out by connecting the GSU when the engine is cooling down, the turbine should be turning over at around 8-9000rpm, if the O ring has worn it will be slipping and wont be turning over as fast probably around 3-5000 rpm

I have sent a request to the JetCat rep in Norway if he has the o-ring in stock. In the mean time, I got the old ring out and flipped it over. 3 successful starts and cooldowns. Runs great. Thanks!

oh well Smokey

I can now say 3 jetcat users have turned over the O ring and re used it!

glad you got it sorted..

The O rings are a bit pricey, i paid £5.00 each for the hrder rubber ones, i havent had to replace one in the PHT3 yet, but i have replaced 2 in my SPh5,i switched to the harder rubber last summer and havent had to change since. 7hrs
