I am planning to buy the Octane Dominator 26, which are on sale now at QWW. I really would have liked the pro but they are sold out. Now is the sport version worth having? As per the the manuf. the sport has the metal head but plastic tail (I think). Is the non-metal tail going to be a problem, since this is a gasser, with more vibrations etc?

Hi this is a good machine but get the CNC tail. It is not super easy to build, so take your time and make sure that it all makes sense as it goes together, you may need to add a few washers here and there or rearrange the odd thing but Irwin is happy to help out. The frames go together very well , the rotor head is a little tricky, but if you know what you are looking at it is fine. All in all its a good machine. Get help if you are not sure, these things have stupid amounts of power so they would be very scary if out of control !!!!!!!

I've been flying the sport version for quite a while now. I am running the CNC tail with mine. The stock tail will work, but the CNC is really bullet proof once assembled. Like Peekay said, it will need some shimming. I think that QWW is now providing some thin shims in the kit to accomplish this.
Other differences between the pro and sport are carbon frame as opposed to G-10. The head is also a double spindle type. The sport is single and is more rigid, which is my preference. The mixing is also a little different. I think for doing FAI type of manuvers, the pro head is best, but for other aerobatics the sport is more responsive, or doesn't feel as soft.

I flew with the sport version plastic blade grips and didn't have a problem with them for probably 20 hours. I did change to the metal tail blade grips to do a little testing for QWW and subsequently bought them. Both sets have thrust bearings. The plastic grips will develop some slop over time, but I have never experienced and failures with them.

Thanks for the info. You mentioned the sport has plastic main grips. I thought they were metal (the website says it is all metal head with single spindle). Is the new sport with metal grips? Can you or someone clarify this?

Peekay is correct. The sport has metal main blade grips and plastic tail blade grips. The only thing that I would change would be the tail box to CNC.
