gearing

Testing will be with 8.27, a prototype 8.18 gearing and 7.91 at 1950 on the head.

When I look at the Rpms on the OS for 8.27 at 1950 head speed unloaded the motor Rpms are at 16126. The OS is rated at 16000 max but we don’t flying with the motor unloaded it usually comes down to 1900 on the head bring the motor rpms to 15713 which is 80% of the max rpms and power. This is where the OS motor makes its best power, but puts the motor on the high side of the power band and tuning with a little cushion.

8.18 the numbers show at 1950 on the head unloaded your rpms are at 15951, when you are flying and loading the heli down you lose about 50 rpms off the head 1900 your motor rpms are at 15542 which puts the motor on the lower end of its 80% power band giving you more tuning and power to work with, more or less a cushion factor if your loading the motor to much it will be able to power though it better. So once testing begins on the 106 I will update you more on there findings.

Hope that helps and makes sense Dino.

Any word on the weight of this engine?

weight

Not sure how much more it is over the currant OS SZ but it is a little heavier.

I can tell you this, the OS SZ is two ounces heavier then a OS C-SPEC and YS SR in the 91 class of motor.

A little more weight wont hurt much if you are gaining a huge amount of HP. As long as Hatori doesn't make the pipe for it bigger than the SB19 it should be ok. before we know it pipe will be supported by the fin mount on the boom.

A 12% increase in displacement is going to necessitate a larger muffler if the engine is to breathe properly. There's no way around it.

I think where the weight is relative to the header is more important. The further away the weight is then the greater chance of serious engine damage in a crash (more leverage exerted on the header). They could make the pipe larger in diameter without making it longer...

muffler and weight

Yes there is a new high performance muffler in the works from TT for the 106, plus a lightweight motor mount that will fit in all R90s with a 91 in it. The 106-foot print is the same as the OS, YS 91 motors currently in the market, and we will be working with all muffler manufactures so every one has a choice on which brand they like to buy. When upgrading to the 106 since it’s the largest heli specific motor coming to the market the light weight motor mount will be an even on the weight savings Dino.

Nice work Dino. I know you can't give specific numbers but is the TT53 selling well so far?

With this larger engine and increase in POWER, are the 90 owners going to need to go back to metal grips as a requirement for safety?

And side re-enforcement - back to the Ninja Stars?

grips

After a good talk with Colin, I feel that the plastic grips SHOULD be ok reason is the head speed will remain the same 1950. What you will see with the 106 motor is more usable HP and Torque in your mid to top range. I will be testing the grips to make sure there is no issue Dino.

only problem I can see is the maximum engine size you can compete with is currently 90 size 15cc

True, for now. But I think that the vast majority of people are recreational fliers and don't care.

Well, I'll be buying one. I'd bet that 99.9 pct of the people who own helis don't compete, and have no desire to do so, and for us, bigger is better.

I'm with you there, It's kind of like that Tim Allen mentality (TV sitcom - Home Improvement) of having the most power on anything.

If the 90's engines gobbled a lot of fuel now, this 106 will be even more so.

FaI

As you can see we are not counting on Fai to drive the market for this motor it’s all about power for the 3D pilots. If there is ever a rule change great if not great.
