Robbe Cuatro - Millennium - Nova - Dyna-X > Anyone build and fly old Schluters?(Champion)

Hi. I'm a returning member who has an old Schluter Champion and in need of assistance. Anyone out there willing to give me a hand? I need someone who can troubleshoot, repair and test fly it for me, with compensation of course. It has a bad vibration problem. I've had it for so long and now finally I fire it up. Now I haven't the skill or patience to troubleshoot it. Anyone in the New York City area?

I'm sure that someone closer will be able to give you a hand with your Champion. I have been able to trace 99% of vibration problems to balancing and tracking the main rotor blades. Span and chordwise CG is very important on the old wood blades that the Schluter kits came with. If your Champion hasn't been crashed and it's possible to rule out the possibility of a bent mainshaft or feathering shaft etc, it should be as smooth as silk. Any one else have any words of encouragement? Do you have access to a local RC club? There might be some members that would lend you a hand with your machine.

You may be right about the blades. I have the old originals and I've been planning to buy a new pair. Thanks

The blades could be the culprit, but the head on the Champion is off balanced from the get go. I have had a few Champions way back and I must say I always had some vibration problems do to the head being unbalanced, the head is not the same on one side as the other so you have to play with it for a long time to get it correct. I then bought a Futura SS and I was hooked on the new ones and sold the old goods off.

Hey Mo. Now that I have something to go for, it gives me more incentive to work on it. Thanks a bunch.

The Champion can be vibration free. As mentioned above, the head needs to be carefully balanced. I used to use a wheel collar on the flybar to cancel out the weight of the big aluminum pitch lever. In fact as I sit here remembering my Champion, it was one of the smoothest flying helis I ever had. I also remember doing a lot of blade balancing. How things have changed!

Hey freebird, great song. How do I know where on the flybar to place the wheel collar?(to cancel out the pitch lever)

The Champions needed the head to be balanced before the blades were balanced. IOW, you need to balance the head and flybar assy before you bolt the blades on and go fly.

I've had at least a dozen Champions over the years and they were great machines.

It's a trial and error process. I used to start by balancing the head on a high point balancer. The head should hold its position with the blade grips horizontal and vertically. After that, you need to balance the head with the blades attached. Then fly the head and tweak it using the wheel collar on the flybar. If you or any of your flying buddies have Ray Hosletter's heli book (1st or 2nd edition), the process is outlined in there.

Once you balance the head, a set of balanced blades will run just fine.
