Does anyone know if there is a way to get paint/primer to stick to a Hawk canopy? I think it is made out of polyethylene (gallon milk jug container?). Thanks!

Scratch the H@ll out of it with sandpaper. Then spray filling primer over it. Then, Scratch it up some more and use more filling primer, until you are down to 600 grit sandpaper. The paint. I start with 75 grit,150, 300, 400, and 600. It will be heavy, but the paint will stick. I have used this method on milk jug canopies, with good results.

P.S. wash the canopy in mild soap and water first.

I'd rather be flying

Tis type of plastic is now used on most 30/50 heli plastic canopies, simply because it is fairly indestructible and easy to get to pop back into shape after a mishap - much the same as that used in the bumpers of modern cars.

So, get some of the modern clear bumper primer. Works very well after proper surface preparation.

Here's my recommendation:

- Wash the canopy in warm, soapy water.

- Sand with 100 grit paper - dry. Sand thoroughly! Get it stringy - that's ok.

- Spray on a flexible bumper primer available at auto parts stores.

- Spray a wet coat of auto primer.

- Spray a coat of black lacquer over the primer - this 'guide coat' will assist you in sanding the primer - you'll see what I mean when you start sanding.

- Sand with 220 grit paper - wet, removing most of the primer. The primer should only be left in the low spots.

- Repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 until you get a very smooth finish - usually 2 repeats.

- Spray one more coat of primer and guide coat, then sand with 400 grit - wet.

- Spray color coat(s).

- Apply any vinyl trim, lettering, etc.

- Spray two coats of automotive clear coat. Do not use clear coat from a spray can, as they will yellow and get sticky when exposed to our high nitro fuels.

Get some "Plastic Adhesion Primer" which is also want many of the bumper primers are.

I used that on my plastic canopy and so far its stood up well to all the bending and flexing
