e-Quick Of Japan EP-8/10/16/18 > 6s and mega motor temps

Decided to go with 6s packs when I bought new ones for my 16v3. Flight power 3700mah. Packs are still new so I have not pushed them to hard yet, mainly 3 minute flights for break in. Mega 1050kv motor on a 12 tooth pinion seems hot for such a short flight. 150F to 160F. Headspeed is around 1900. Flys great but motor temp worries me. CC85hv cool to touch, 90% to 100% on throttle curve, battery temps ok. Nothing binding, nothing to tight. Any ideas?

Sounds like the 22/30/3E, get the heat sinks for it, it will stay nice and cool.

Yep thats it. 22/30/3E with a heat sink and the canopy has been moved slightly forward so the top of the motor is not covered. Any thoughts on a different motor? Lower temps, same or better power. Wonder if the newer mega motors with a fan would run cooler?

Forget the Mega motor, get a Medusa, 36-50-1000

Ordered a Medusa 36-60-1100v2 for my 16v3 yesterday. Went with the higher kv to see if I could bring throttle percents down to the 75 to 80 percent range as reccomended by Castle. Will post some observations when I get it installed.

Timing......

Change the timimg in the esc to mild/low, which ever your has. Also, on the mega motor you need to change the pvm (I think that's it) to the low setting. I think, can you tell me which ones are available and then I'll remember which one to set it at. Mega motors are great. You just need to set them up right. I had one in my 16v3 and it came down cool after I spoke with Mega and changed these settings.

Currently using standard timing, there is a low timing advance option. The PWM switching rate is set to low, 13kHz. Temps here have only been in the low 70's and motor seems hot. In mid summer I'm afraid it will far exceed the recommended max temp.

change pwm setting

Change this to the middle setting and try that. These are different pole motors and need the middle setting. Atleast that's what Mega motors told me. That worked for me when I ran that motor.

Thanks for the help. I'll give that a try. Any suggestions for the medusa?

Medusa was out of stock. Just recieved a Century 600A/Z-Power Z30-A 1100Kv. Hope to install tomorrow. Would like to run around 1900rpm headspeed at no more than 70% throttle so I can give the CC85 governor mode a try. Any suggestions on pinion? Jimmbo did'nt you run a Z-Power in your QJ-8? How did you like it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That is a good choice for the EP16 , I was running the Century 600/1050kv motor on my EP16 and it was realy powerful on 6s.
You will need to use a 10 tooth pinion at around 75-80% throttle on the HV85 CC PH, ESC.... I was using the HV85 also.. Gov mode works great.. Check out the Bob Finless videos on the freak site, the ones for setting up the HV85 in Gov mode , it is a MUST watch for setting up Gov mode on the Castlecreations Pheonix ESC`s. Make sure you watch all of the set-up vids , and do the set-up the way he does them...
The reason I say that I was using , is cause I traded off my EP16...

Thanks Jimbo. Just got done watching setup videos for the second time. To much info for just one viewing! You think 10 tooth will be enough? On the 1050Kv mega with 12 tooth at 90%, headspeed is just barely 1860rpm. Is the Century that much more efficient?

The Zpower motors are very impressive motors , it was my motor of choice until I tried the Scorpion HK-3026-1210 motor . And I have tried alot of motors on the Quicks..

Put a couple of flights on the Century/ZPower today. Headspeed around 1920rpm at 80% on the fixed endpoint curve. No time to experiment with gov mode. Very impressed with the motor, power was better and after 6.5 minutes of hovering and ff flight motor, batteries, and esc were barely warm. Motor temps much better than the Mega. Jimbo if the Scorpion is better than the Century/ZPower than you must have a rocket ship. Thanks to everyone for their help!
