Blitz Helicopters Avro 90 > White 3D inserts and hard dampners

I'm building my head tonight. I got the 3D insert kit. It contains replacement inserts that are white delrin instead of the stock black ones.

The spindle hole in the inserts is a bit smaller, by design, to keep the feathering spindle from moving around. This makes for a stiffer head.

Three things I noticed:

1) My white inserts barely fit into the head. I had to force one in and the other one would not go at all until I sanded it down to a smaller diameter. The stock black inserts fit nicely.

2) This system of twin o-rings for the dampners is familiar to folks who have built MA heads. The o-rings didn't last long in MA heads. They eventually went to a custom shaped single piece of rubber and that works pretty good. I haven't measured, but I'd bet the MA part would fit right into teh Avro head.

3) The white inserts I have make the feathering spindle ride up a little higher in the head.. What I mean is that I would expect the hole in the insert to line up straight down the middle of the head. The job here is to hold the spindle in place, but I don't see the logic in holding the spindle in place, a little higher than on-center. Anybody else have the white inserts and notice this?

I installed the white inserts as well. They have a very precise fit. I used a little soft clamp to seat them all the way down. Once I did that, the spindle went through just fine.

I am still building mine, but I assume once in the air, it will all settle into its correct position.

We won't know until we have many flights on the machine, but I assume the o-rings will wear much better than other machines because of the delrin insert limiting the travel of the spindle.

How is your build coming along?

From what I have been told is what causes o-ring wear is the spindle moving side to side more than up and down (Jason K mentioned this as well when he went thru the head design on the 700N). The inserts allow the spindle to only move up and down which should prolong the life of the o-ring dampners...

I still have black ones in mine so I do not have any experence yet putting a white set in, but I will put the white ones in mine later this week...

I did the gears first. I've got the tail and the head built. The frames are mostly done. I'm rebuilding the engine I'm putting in this (a blue-head c-spec w/omi carb)... and I'm waiting on parts for that. So I don't have an engine in it yet. Heck I don't have any servos or RX yet either.

I want to have it all done and flying by the end of April. Except for the carb, I think I'm on target for that.

The white inserts limit the up-down motion of the spindle more than the black inserts. If your white ones are centered higher than the center of the hole in the yoke perhaps you raised a burr when you were pushing them in and they are not seating properly.

I have not used the black inserts so I cannot compare the white to the black, but after trying many different o-ring combinations I have a hard on the inside and a soft on the outside. Two hards and one hard on the outside caused wobbling in autos.

If you use two hard ones do not use the included black plastic shims as they will apply too much pressure to the bearing. The plastic shims work with one hard and one soft o-ring.
