flyingquisinart Senior Heliman Location: Detroit Area
| I have it. If you are new to heli's the lack of a manual could be a problem. There are build videos (mine came with a disc of videos) to help you through it. They are good except for slight discrepancies as the versions have changed a little. If you are new to helis and get one, feel free to PM me on anything. I am no expert by any means but many of us are here to help.
Sonix Motor - some have had bad luck. I find it perfectly adequate for flying around and have about 50 flights on it plus a couple of crashes and it runs fine and smooth, just not a powerhouse. I have the cheap Otter ESC and it works adequately as well. I wanted a decent "real" heli to fly when I can't get to the field to fly my Tiger 50, and it fits the bill nicely. It hovers very stable, almost like a 30 - I was very impressed. The package I bought came with nice CF blades that held up thru a few minor crashes, Otter speed control, Sonix motor, one battery I accidentally shorted trying to solder, and a cheap gyro. I sold the gyro. I crashed multiple times in the snow, replacing spindles and the occasional main mast. My last crash was more dramatic but cost only about $50 including blades, gears, boom. Now I have spares for my next crash. My 50 runs me a min $150 to crash. The CF frame is super strong, the aluminum seems really good, and drilled and tapped accurately. The tail is nearly a work of art - its finest point.
If you can afford it, get a good gyro. Nothing will turn you off faster from the hobby than a bad gyro. I went kinda cheap on motor and ESC but put a Futaba 401 and 9650 servo on it so the tail performs perfectly.
Good luck whatever you choose. If you do buy, buy new linkage rods from a Trex450 and use the Trex or Mini Titan flybar. This will help. I'm using the stock paddles which are kinda heavy/stable but they tend to fit loose on the flybar so I have a dab of CA glue to keep them in place. Works well enough for me. It has very nice flying characteristics - much like a larger heli and can handle a stiff breeze.
