Having a For Sale/Classifieds section on any site is a business decision that also opens the owner up to potential liabilties. If the owner begins to actively and visibly police that area, the risk of liabilty increases. Secondarily, providing more than a token benefit to some users would most likely require a substantial increase in time and effort. It is not unusual for a site operator to stay completely out of all user deals.

EDIT:

Some scammers have begun to make use of libraries and wireless connections to do their dirty deeds, done dirt cheap.

@ Boidman

Noted.

However this has nothing to do with policing the classifieds, just deterring a double sign up in the forum, which in itself takes space. The only effort I see is to write the program which takes care of the rest.

I dont see a liability issue with that. Its still buyer beware as stated in the "users policy" to which you agree when you sign up.

Once again, its just a "deterrence" for that particular activity or loop hole sounds even better.

Nothing is fool proof.

Try and sign up with the same name into anything into the same website anywhere in the internet and it will be denied with "that name is already being used" or words to that effect. So,you must select another name. Was that by chance or was it meant via a program?

Mark has the last word either way.

Im still waiting on validation whether doable or not.

Pistol_Pete,

Your suggestion is absolutely doable, and Ryder my very well have some form of it implemented for his own purposes, but if that were to be made visible, regardless the potential benefit, his liability would go up.

Requiring agreement to a "users policy" is really just part of the boilerplate process of running a business. If a problem that occured on a site went so far as to require legal intervention, the "users policy" might not hold much weight during the course of resolution.

For instance, if a $5000 deal went bad, and Ryder had participated in any way with the process, even if that was only a script running in the background, the chances of it needing at least his time involvement during the legal resolution would quite possibly increase substantially. Who would want to increase their already moderate liabity and time spent, at the request of a law enforcement agency or legal office, if things got nasty?

Doable? Yes. Smart business? No.

MartyH,

You are the one that really needs to get a GRIP. You are trying to twist stuff up now. Holzback did not forget HIMSELF, what he forgot was Mike Rapka's (the scumbag) address. It was when he went back home to retrieve the address he decided to do a search on the scammer's name.

For your info, not all deals that sounds too good to be true are actually too good to be true. I have sold stuff on RR that you will consider too good to be true, but guess what? They were actually true.

You need not insult people here by calling them GREEDY for looking for a good deal, even if they are "too good to be true" by your reckoning.

BTW - You still didn't explain how looking for a good deal equates to greed.

@boidman

I know that even a release of liability does not protect the signee nor the issuer from being sued. Be it in ink or electronically.

Anyone can be subpoena even if not directly involved.

I will even go as far as saying with risk that even a forum owner can be sued for NOT doing anything. Despite whether the lawsuit is won or lost, as we all know, the lawyers have everything to gain and nothing to lose...hence the real winners.

And for the doable part...thanks.

Pete, anybody can use an anonymous proxy server to disguise the originating IP. whatsmyip will show the IP of whatever the proxy server is set up to serve. And if the proxy is in some far off country, it is very difficult to identify someone in the manner that you described.

Ghost Surf is an excellent utility that allows you to surf the net anonymously through the automated use of a "proxy server". This basically means you visit web sites through a third party "anonymous proxy server" site which hides your IP (internet) address and other information from the websites you visit to stop them collecting information about you, what sites you visit and what you are downloading.

$29.95...I bought mine at Circuit City. I don't use it anymore, but back when I used to it did the trick nicely...

you are right, infact i bought a rjx xtreme with upgraded pitch levers, and the metal tail blade grips with the thrust bearings. It also had the sensor for the carb smart, os hyper and funtech pipe. i paid 510shipped that stuff is well beyonf 500$. the chopper was almost new only 2 gall through it.if the prices are broken down i paid 150 for a pipe and engine, and 350 for an almost brand new rjx xtreme with all the upgrades.

as far as the trex, he had no set price i gave him an offer to get things started. i figured he would have said no and gave me a higher price. as far as greed, nope, i just made an offer, what am i gonna do," oh, you took my low offer you must be a scammer, sorry i am going to withdraw my offer." the guy had posistive feed back, but i bet he sells small stuff builds up his feed back and then takes advantage of people.

This is very true. If you check his other name, this is what he did.

The cool thing about Ghost Surf was, you could pick your country, or you could leave it random. I used to allow pop ups, just because it was funny. One "refresh" you appeared to be in Australia, the next, Hong Kong. After a while, it got to be annoying though, because you can't shop online with it...confuses the hell out of cookies.

Ghost Surf also came with a pretty good file scrubber, and a couple other little goodies. I guess it was worth $30. That was probably 3 or 4 years ago though.
