Gasser Model RC Helicopters > what is avgas and would it benifit or gasser motors

In laymans terms octane actually retards the burn rate of fuel or slows the burn rate down. Whichever you prefer. It's a waste of money unless you actually have detonation.

Or if you need to use a specific fuel for other reasons, whatever its octane rating may happen to be.

Seems there are varying schools of thought on the web.....huh. So I guess just because ONE article presented saying lead doesn't help valve stems doesn't mean it is THE way it is.....because there is another quote from another source saying the opposite. Anyhow, enough of this going off on the lead subject. I believe that the original octane question has been answered....more octane doesn't help these engines, and can make it run worse. I added that the lead could cause an issue.
My G26 seems to be all fat and happy on 87 octane...

The lead can cause plug fouling depending on how hot the engine is run. If it is run for long periods of time with rich mixtures and the resulting relatively low head temps, lead deposites can form on the plugs. Long story short, it should not be something a stock gasser engine should need or even benefit from (lead or higher octane). I apologize for contributing to the conversation diversion earlier, but hopefully this thread provided some interesting reading for somebody anyway. I am a mechanical junkie and love the pursuit of understanding how things work.

Bottom line: The only reason to run avgas is because it smells better. Same with camper gas.

Of course I think that Bruno has another good reason since pump gas in his country sucks.

Here's a thought: I wonder how a 50/50 mix of 100LL and Camper fuel would run.

I probably should try it sometime since there is an airport about 2 miles from my house and the largest store Cabelas has is between me and that airport

Maybe after I have my Zenoah broke in and am comfortable with the way it runs I'll try that out.

I hear that camper fuel is something like 57 octane...so a 50/50 with avgas should give a good octane ratio. Give it a shot and see how it runs. Of course I got a gasser to save on fuel....how much is avgas now with regular being 3.50 around here....avgas must be close to 6.00 a gallon.

true, but even if your fuel ends up at $8/gallon (with oil) your are burning it at 1/2 the rate of glow. I think my R50 uses more fuel/min. than my Predator.

Plus the blended smell of camper fuel and avgas would be great. Much better than my weedeater smell that I'm getting with 87 pump gas and Lawnboy

EDIT: If all I had to buy was fuel, this would be a cheap hobby!

20% is over 20 per gallon around here. Doesn't take long to go through a gallon...and that adds up. The cash I save on fuel goes for more crash parts...
