Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Wanted to show my first paintjob - Fury canopy

Hi all

This is my very first post. I haven't got my Fury up and running yet, still deciding and saving up for the radio gear. Anyway, I was pretty happy with the way my canopy turned out. It's a bit different to the other stylings I see around, but oh well.

My paint job idea was based on an old R/C model car I owned, the Mazda 787B. I've included a pic of the real car to show you all what I mean.

Well the thumbnails may not be ready by the time you read this, but I'd appreciate some comments on my pride and joy!

First Paint Jobs!!

I have been seeing lots of really nice "first" paint jobs. I am really considering buying an extra Raptor Canopy to give it a shot.

With my cars, I have had problems with paint bleeding under the masking tape, I have tried several different types of masking tapes. I never scuffed the surface on the cars before painting.

What type of tape is everyone else using and how do you prevent teh paint bleeding?

Next, colors colors colors decisions decisions DECISIONS!!!

Madcow, on a side note, what pipe do you have outfitted on your Fury?

Nice job painting!

Paint / muffler

Brian, I used a Norton brand of masking tape that I bought from an auto paint store, I think 3M would have something similar which would be just as good.

If I remember rightly though, I think the polycarb paints used on the inside of car shells has more of a tendancy to bleed than the type of paint you'd use for the outside of a canopy. I used auto acrylics with a flexible additive. I paid a heap for the right gear and although the job isn't flawless I really learnt a lot. I try and tape immediately prior to spraying and also give a final press around the masking tape to make sure it's sitting flat. I do spray pretty heavy and I didn't have any run problems with this canopy.

The muffler is a Yusa, from what I've seen it looks very similar to some other brands, especially a couple of 90 mufflers I've seen, though of course a little smaller.

Hope that helps,
Greg

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info.

Your muffler looks alot like 3 mufflers I saw on some 90 machines a couple of weeks...I was just wondering.

Joe,
I have been to your website several times...AWESOME canopies. I have come extremely close to e-mailing you concerning painting a canopy for a Raptor 60.

I would like to get into painting at some point, but I also do not want a plane old canopy on my 60 right now. Then comes decisions...I think I would want 100 canopies to try ever new paint jobs.

Thanks,
Brian
