Gadgetdude, I got the same fuselage

The mini-flash, does it allow you to adjust the rate and number of flashes of each light ?

You see, I would prefer the top and bottom beacon to have a slower rate of flashing and the back white beacon just two rapid flashes and then a waiting period of maybe a couple of seconds before it comes on again.

Tell me please if the software allows you to do that. If it's possible I'll go ahead and order a set.

Thanks. It looks great by the way, I can't wait to get started on mine. I am just waiting to resolve the lighting issue because I am afraid I won't be able to get to the navigation lights on the side if I start with the retracts.

Tom, please keep producing these kits. I stumbeled across your site two months ago. I downloaded the SW and instantly knew I wanted your kit. You asked what we were planning. I an doing a Huey so I need two red, two green, one strobe/beacon, and one or two (haven't decided) white for the tail. I really like the looks if the wingspan beacon. If you could come up with that it would be great. I'd rather buy from one source than hop around.

Also, I don't remember seeing them but offering resistors would be nice. My local Raido Shack are idiots and their selection is not that great. If you offered them it would be more headache free.

Edit: I just went on your site and see you now offer the resistors.

I stongly suggest anyone curious about his kit to download the program and play with it. It's easy to use. I emailed him and you can use either a spare switch or program a stick to turn them on and off. Until I decided what 8 channel radio I want I will just program the throttle to turn the lights on at just under 1/4 stick.

Elgreco,
Go to DIYRC.com and download the free MiNI FlASH progamming software. You can see exactly what you can programme your lights to do.

Simply put...ingenious!

gadgetdude,
I'm going to make you my PR person! Really... thanks so much for helping others out too. And thanks for another awesome video! I now link to that one from my Mini-Flash webpage! And boy, you have some nice helis! I'm a BIG plane guy and tried getting into helis a few years ago. Bought, built, flew and sold... all in one month. It was taking time away from my big electric r/c airplane hobby!

Elgreco... sorry I could not respond to your questions earlier... and thanks for the order! The software error issue some are experiencing is HOT on my To-Do list. It's actually pissing me off a bit. I can not find a computer around me that has this error... imagine that, therefore making it tough to troubleshoot. I just ran across this VB Setup Wizard (came with VB5) that is suppose to build an install file (cab file) that includes all required dlls, ocx, etc... I'm going to mess with that a bit this week and report back.

I also messed around with a rotating beacon simulator/driver (PIC) that mimics the rotation and flash of a real beacon. Rather than trying to shoe-horn this into the already working Mini-Flash controller, this would be an easy and cheap add-on to the Mini-Flash. It could consist of a small PCB that would hold a 8-pin PIC, and a couple resistors and a transistor for powering the beacon/LED. I'll hopefully work on it a bit more the next day or so and try to take a video to show you all. Stay tuned... and please keep the ideas rolling. Soon I'm going to spec out a new controller (no PC needed to program) and try to include as much as the features you all have mentioned (within reason of course... or should I say, within the bounds of the PIC and memory)

Now if you read all through that... I have a few question re: a rotating beacon...

Q1. What should the rotate/flash rate be on this new beacon? (once a second?)

Q2. How should it operate? Dim up to full, quick Flash, Dim down to off? OR simply Dim up to Full, then dim down to off?

I could also try to make these options programmable... we'll see.

I think

Tom

I reckon simply Dim up to Full, then dim down to off?

Way to go. Good luck and you can put me on the list of those wanting!

Tom,
Actually did you get the chance to check out the wingspanmodels site ?
In the video of their rotating beacon it shows how they have it working and I think that would be a good base as far as the rate goes.

I think you'll like it.

And his software issue is pissing me off. I copied the two files to a USB key and going to try it at a couple of more computers I could think of. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

BTW, if you think you can send my order express 3-4 days, I wouldn't mind paying you more for the shipping. It's just that your site only offered me 1 way. You could email me the difference and will send you payment with paypal. I'd rather not wait 2 weeks for this.Thanks.

Mario.

Tom;

The RAM rotating beacon is adjustable according to Fireman. I saw his heli and the beacon is very nice,, but I didn't look at the controller to see how it looks. Maybe you should buy one of the RAM beacons to see how it works. Fireman's just kind of pulses at an adjustable rate with no hesitation. Slow ramp up to max brightness and then slow ramp down to a minimum brightness. No flash. But that's how theirs works and doesn't necessarily meet the needs of everyone.

Cool.. thanks guys... I finally did watch that video... cool!
Even cooler... I messed around later tonight and have something I think you'll all like. I took some videos and hope to put some clips up here later tomorrow. I have a very similar beacon sim that looks just like Wingspans, and also messed around with a double flash beacon. Looks real cool! Got a video of it driving various LEDs (red 5mm, white 8mm and 1w luxeon). Sorry to keep you in suspense... gotta get to bed! zzzzzz....zzzzzz.....

tauscnc - Get XLIGHTS!

If you want the best get the air system from Xlights. They are the best thing out their. And they are coming out with this air system light module in 30 days. It has 10 pins (4-solids, 3-strobes, 2 user controled on off lights. I will com with 10 led's with it as well. Look at my blackhawk with the Xlights system!

Man those are some beautiful scale helis! wow!! Nice lights, but personally I don't see how they are any different than toms setup. Either way I think the rotating beacon would look awesome on both those helis. Great work!

gadgetdude,
The rotating beacon does look great! I think we will both have to get some on the bell 222 (me first ).

The difference is the plug and play (no programing) application, and the powere of the LED's. They have 1 mile vis in the daylight, no LED out there for RC does that. Also the led size is 6mm not the 5mm standard. Believe it or not it makes a big difference! Se ye in the skies bro! Thanks for the kudos

Tom I just finished programming my lights. Very nice and easy setup.

The only thing missing right now is the beacon effect you just teased us with.
Hoping you'll have something soon as you said, PM me and I'll be your first customer on those.

Great work and product.

Hey guys!
Sorry for not posting a little earlier... been tied up myself with work/travel this past week. Thanks for all the interest on the rotating beacon simulator/driver. Hopefully this weekend (tonight actually) I'll get something more complete working. I'm figuring it'll consist of a PIC, a few resistors and a transistor for driving up to a 1W Luxeon. I'm hoping to design it so it can be used stand-alone and also controllable (on/off) when connected to an output of the Mini-Flash (i.e. "add-on" ). Also, it'll be user-programmable using a simple jumper, allowing the use to choose up to 8 or 12 different rotating/flash patterns. I'll try to post more in a day or two. For people that already purchased a Mini-Flash... I'll try to offer this add-on at a reduced cost... Heck... you all will be my beta-testers! Stay tuned...
