hi Dave
Two or three years ago l would have agreed with you on learning to fly in normal gyro mode but now l`m all for heading lock from day one.l feel that if you learn to fly in normal then you have to learn again in HH.Seen a lot of people get to grips with their flying in quick time in the last 2 or 3 years and IMO this is down to good afordable gyros.Mine`s never out of HH now, after all l didn`t spend the £315 to watch the tail waveing about. Can`t even remember how to correct it in backwards loops and rolls now,its so long since l had too.

Galifrey
Don`t feel bad about that crash, your almost there.

Hi Tosh, don't remember posting that it is better to learn FF in normal mode, though I do think it is true, have you been reading my mind??

To tell the truth, I am coming round to your way of thinking as well, and leave my gyro in HH all the time, though I still think that for learning, HH is best for hovering and non-HH for circuits. I managed to thoroughly stuff a Concept a couple of years back when my FW instincts insisted on pushing the stick forward during the inverted part of a roll, to this day I feel that had the model weathercocked during its backward inverted death dive I could have saved it, instead of which I couldn't figure out what to do until the model was a smoking hole.

Galifrey, you're right, I should apologise about the posing comment, it was out of order. Weather's been crap here and I haven't flown for 2 weeks, so getting tetchy.

Yeah, but I'm too tired to get into it now, and I really should go and sort out the wiring in my Sky Fox, spring has to get here sometime!

(still reckon posing's for poofs, though!)

Your all poofs I recon!!

OOPS did I type that out loud?

In true fence sitter style I can see both sides, I can't really speak for Finndave but I think what he meant to say was " Why don't you keep your lovely shiney kit until your done crashing regularly?" unfortunatly a cold induced slip of the brain caused it to come out something like "Your a soft southern poof!"

On the issue of "To HH or not to HH" I think that if you have any experience of rate gyros or planks go from rate to HH, If you have never experienced these just go straight to HH.

I'm a keen motorcyclist I have an unmodified ('cept sticky tyres) TDM 900 and plain leathers etc, I purposefully go out looking for the R1 No Fear (of them doing anything fast) brigade and go round the outside of them with knee and pegs on the deck, one handed laughing me **** off as they wobble hopelessly about, They might get you on the straights if they are really lucky but by then your hyperventilating with laughter and couldn't care less anyway!!

Just my 2 penneth

BTW I got time for everyone in this post so please nobody be offended by my drivel!

Maddog, no mate, you've got it all wrong, I meant to type 'Your a soft southern poof!" but it came out as 'I would have thought that the original fins would help with directional stability as well as with visual orientation for your circuit practise.' Too much diplomacy

From experience, I would say that will happen when you stop flying regularly.

Maddog, just re-read you post and saw the bit about bikers - I can well remember seeing a standard CX 500, two up, streak past all the posing bikes on the way up to the Bol d'or at Paul Ricard in '82, the rider simply had no fear (knew how to handle mountain roads, too, he had Swiss plates).
It's not about what you got, it's only about how you use it. Someone with gear several levels above their ability is simply a fashion victim.

Tosh, the strange thing is that while you did misquote me, you did say exactly what I have said on previous occasions (though possibly not on RR)

Dave no offence at th posing comment mate... Most of the reasons for upgrading any heli are that it makes it look nice and doesnt improve the way it flys...

I have very few shiny anodized bits on my heli with the exception of replacement parts and a quick flybar carrier with head button...

Only broken parts will be upgraded as I think in the main the plastic parts with ballraces are pretty good and damn cheap to replace...

I even fly with wooden blades for the time being...

Seriously,
We all enjoy this hobby for our own reasons, personally I find the technical and engineering side of it most interesting and although I really want to fly 3d like JK, there's summat really nice about just watching the heli hovering at dusk especially with a quietish model (eez gone soft in the heed!)

I have a few nice bits and bobs on my helis too and if I could afford it my head would be red like Johnboys (happarently the quick UK head makes a noticable difference to flying precision as well)

And I should qualify crashing less frequently, is compared to how frequently one used to crash...if you know what I mean...

Finndave, me mate Soapy, was a mad/clever street sleeper builder and he modified an old honda RS250 ( the single cylinder commuter that looked like a smaller CB250 not the two stroke racer) he put in an ex race XBR 500 motor, a 40mm Amal flat slide carb and an XR cam (for more grunt) it was mad as toast! (55hp / 100kg) It only did 110 but would wheelie off the throttle in fourth, everybody who rode it fell off or nearly fell off it. I flipped it just pulling away from me mothers house. It was like a modern supermoto in 1990 and coz it was soo light it handled really well. He used to wheelie it past sports bikes at 70mph with me on the back laughing me cock off, whoops I just carreared off topic there didn't I. sorry

Are NE of you dudes going to/competing in the 3D Masters this year?
I've never been B4 but I might have a mosie on down to see how its done.

Cheers
Dave

BTW Mark have you got a sim?, Doctor Davey recommends 2 to 3 X 20 minutes doses daily and all symptoms of a motor (neurone ) related nature should subside in a week or two GARANTEED.
Unfortuantley they'll come back again soon when 3d' itis causes complications but we deal with that when it happens!
