I currently run 1/10th scale r/c electric touring cars. I'm interested in starting electric r/c helis this fall. So i plan on spending from now till then researching them.

Right now i'm looking at the Kyosho EP Concept SR. I'm looking for suggestions or opnions on this helicopter.

I'm also open to other electric heli suggestions.

I know the basics of helicopter flight but if you have any flight suggestions and tips they're are also welcome. thanks from an r/c heli newbie!

Any reason you're set on an electric heli?

Normally I'd recommend a Raptor 30 to start. If you want a full size electric heli, check into the Mikado Logo series helis, or the Joker (don't remember who manufacturers it). The main problem with electrics is, that unless you want to spend a lot of money on lithium battery packs, you're going to be very limited on flight times, and I think most of the larger outdoor electrics are pretty expensive to crash (and you WILL crash). I might be wrong. Another thing to consider is that there aren't that many people running electrics, so if you need hands on help you might be SOL. If it were me I'd go with a nitro heli like the Raptor 30. With a 30 and 15% fuel you'll get nice long runtimes, and you won't spend most of your time recharging batteries. Plus, Raptors are dirt cheap to crash, parts are readily available, and everybody and their brother flys a Rappy or has flown one in the past and can give you detailed help if you need it.

I'm just an electric r/c person. Don't want to have to buy fuel all the time and its noisier.

Yeah i'll probably crash but i'm planning ahead for that...i have been looking at those other helicopters. I have some NMIH batteries already so i'll probably stick to those.

thanks

Hey yeah i figured i'll get gas guys trying to persuade me. but i get that with r/c cars too so i'm kinda used to it i guess. I'm against electric because they're noisy, dirty and vibrate a lot. Yeah i'll look into that heli. how complex is it? i like buiding things and will visit your site soon because i want to see what the inside looks like. I like realism but i know i'll have fun flying this heli.

How long did it take you to build confidence in your flying? and how many times have you crashed when you were first starting? I'm guessing the Logo 10 is your first heli.

Also what motor do you use/recomment. I've just gotten into brushless motor systems in my r/c car so i'm thinking maybe go with that for the heli. I'm willing to spend around $1k to start. I have a charger and some batteries already so i'll just need electronics and the heli kit.

Thanks for the info

LOL yes that was a typo. Yes I meant i'm against glow engine heli's lol. I think i need to beat myself for that one lol.

Ok i think i'll look into the logo 10. I still have half a year to think about it. i only plan on getting one heli that i can only upgrade a little. I don't want it to turn in my r/c car thing where i want them all lol. I'm sure i'll still have the temptations.

Do you recommend a 6 channel radio or do i need less?

I plan on flying it over grass...how bad can these crashes get if i'm just learning and doing things slowly? have you crashed the logo 10? how bad was that and what was the situation?

Do you have any detailed pics of the insides of the logo 10? perhaps the rotor and swashplate assembly.

I also see that the logo 10 is for 10-14 cells. Do you know of any good helis that can run off of 6-12 cells? that are of compareable size and realism in terms of the rotor assemblies?

I have a schulze 18.61 controller and lehner 5300 brushless setup for one of my cars. Could i use the controller for the logo 10? i know i can't use the 5300 cause it can't handle so many cells.

I'm in a toss up between the kyosho and the logo 10 now. Are you by any chance familiar with the kyosho?

Sorry for all the questions....i feel like the newbie's i talk to in the r/c car forums that get kinda annoying with all the questions. so now i know what they feel like lacking the knowlege.

Hey yeah i did check out your site. I also when to to the manufacturer site and looked at the manual. Its very detailed and looks like it might be my winner.

Just wondering how much do you think it would cost to get started not including a charger and brushless controller

Yeah i'm going to look for a flight sim now. any suggestions for that?

I'll be looking into radio soon too. again i won't be getting anything till fall.

Actually now that i think of it, my schulze controller has a helicopter mode so i can use that...i plan on getting a new controller for my cars anyway. just gotta get a motor now.

Is it possible to mount two 6 cell stick packs in series in stead of a 12 cell pack?

Yeah i'm hoping to get other opinions...maybe suggestions for other helis because my options are still wide open. You have taught me a lot though and i thank you.

You are looking for another opinion so here's one.

Glen speaks the truth. Get a Logo 10. It is more capable than other helis you could consider.

If you want to start more basic you could get a Corona which is a good, durable heli, but it is fixed pitch and would be a shorter term investment if you get more seriously into helis.

Ok Logo 10 it is unless something better for the price comes out by this fall. I'm just wondering what size is the heli? is it a 30 size?

I for one WON'T dissuade you from persuing e-helis.

BUT I will strongly dissuade you from getting a Kyosho e-concept. It's BAAAAAD!!! I've had too many bad experiences from owners who have me set up theirs and it was a real chore. Control system is sloppy, blades are horrible and flight duration was equally dismal.

Logo 10 is a excellent choice. The JR Voyager E is a nice quality product too, but the base kit includes such lousy stuff that you'll end up throwing them away. At least the Logo allows you to get the right motor/esc combos right away from day 1.

Thanks guys. I think i'm going to get a hummingbird at the same time this fall so i can work on the logo 10 while i learn the basics on the hummingbird. I know its not as complex but it'll at least get my reflex times up and the hummingbird is cheap and durable.

Yeah i've been hearing bad things about the EP concept now that i'm researching. The logo seems to have a big quality difference compared to the concept.

I'm looking into the hitec eclipse radio to use on both helis.

I'm going to buy some new batteries as well probalby more 3000mah nimh from Model electronics that come in solderless powertubes. I have 3 6 cell sets for my r/c cars. I think i'll take your advice and get some 12 cell packs. These solderless power tubes lets you maintain each battery so you can pick out a dead cell when necessary.

I'll be looking into gyro's and ubec's eventually over the summer when the time to buy everything gets closer

thanks again,
Keith

Ok i've been researching servos now. What do you think of Hobbico CS-12MG in the logo 10? they seem fast and strong. If they're good, could i use one with the gyro? or should i get a digital servo for the gyro?

I'm also looking into the hitec 7 channel eclipse radio.

Thanks,
Keith

I'd strongly suggest against using off-brand servos and go with servos with a good proven track record in helis. I prefer either Futaba 9252's if in a CCPM application, or 9202's for general heli aps. The 9202's are not the fastest servos around, but they are strong and have been used very successfully in helis. If you don't want to spend the money on higher end coreless or digital servos, at least get a decent BB name brand servo.

For the tail, I'd say get a Futaba 401 gyro w/ 9253 digital servo. This is a very good gyro/servo combo and a good value. They are typically priced about $200 from a US shop.

If I were you I'd also consider getting a nicer radio than the Eclipse 7. I'm sure it's a nice radio, at least the one at my LHS looks pretty decent for the price. But you should ask yourself if that radio is going to be right for you in a year from now. I, for one, found that I wanted both more channels and more capabilities than my lower-end RD6K could provide, so I ended up effectively wasting $250 when I went to a nicer radio rather than saving and buying the nicer radio to start. I'd suggest any of the following, in my order of preference from most to least:

Futaba 9Z (any version, WC2 is best)
Futaba 9CHP
JR 8103

Any one of these will suit you both as a beginner, and will grow with you later.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably get the futaba radio and some jr servos. I'm kinda attached to Towerhobbies where i get most of my r/c car stuff. I don't think they sell JR electronics there so i'll be looking through the advertisments on this page. Ok so probably go with the GY401/S9253 combo since everyone seems to be using it.

E-gpeden,
I was looking at your servo listings. Are those the total price for the number of servos in the parethenses?

Another thing i saw on your site i believe was battery support. With the solderless powertubes from model electronics, you do not need to mod the battery for extra support. The batteries are squeezed in using two threaded rods on each side of the battery. I'll be sure to buy some nimh from them again...debating between $88 for 12 cells or $100 for 14 cells. hmmm I'll have to think about it. I guess that's what this summer is for.

thanks,
Keith
