ignition system

I've come up with a way to eliminate the glow stick or whatever to light my glow plug. I bought this thing a few months back called
'autostart'. It's designed to work with top start engines by a switch
that comes in contact with the starter's drive shaft. It consists of a 1.2 volt nicad battery, some wires and a momentary swith. The switch is a square type box that appears to be only installable as designed.

I took this system and replaced the switch with a lil' momentary switch (push button) that ya get at RS for $4.00 for 4. Rewired the antiquated start system, and now all I have to do is 'mash the button' when I start the chopper. I can charge the glow battery when I charge my heli's battery pack.

These things're simple to make, and I can't find em anymore on the net.

Jet Ranger update

hi folks,

A lil update on my Jet Ranger. Parts're not easily available as of yet....but she's on her way to becoming a 'flyer'. Just finished sanding her down, ready for a new paint scheme, (gonna go with that CPD scheme). Also, picked up an electric start system for her from Ebay (1980's vintage), I figure it'll not only make startin' her easier, but it'll add some value to the bird. I scrapped the electric glow start because the Electra start comes with one.

My next door neightbor's an auto painter n' he's gonna help me paint it. I gotta paint gun, now to find a compressor to use it with.
Wanna thank all yawl for your input and assistance on findin' what I need to make this project enjoyable. My wife says I need to take out a double indemnity insurance policy in case I cut off a limb...or my HEAD!! LOL

Catch yawl later.

Jim

update

I cut open the luggage compartment and made a metal panel for my switches to put in there outa sight. Bought new window mldng. and some hinges/latches. Also got some of those stick-on rivets from Vario...but they seem too large, so I got the rivet kit from Starwood, (the kind with the needles) maybe it'll make her look more realistic.

I know I said I wasn't gonna change anything...but...It's taken so long to find what I need for her, that I just started simply detailing it. May take me a while, but I'm in no hurry.

The electric start kit put the fan about 2-3 inches below the belly and I didn't care for that scenario and modified it so the start runs off the main belt. Had to have new main belt made. Just got the belts in today and was checkin' out the alignment...appears to line up fine.

I also broke the threaded part of my crankshaft on the 61 engine, found an 80 and am tryin' to figure out if the head/heatsink from the 61'll swap over to the 80. I'll have pics in a few days to show some of the work I've done.

The temperature here's been well in the 90's and with wildfires in the area, I've had to spend a lot of time indoors. My health won't allow me to be outside in high temp/humid conditions. When it started gettin' hot, my body didn't like the change so I was sick for a while.

Patients, patients...

You're not the only one prepping an old Kavan for flight. I know of three others, mine being one, that are currently being either built or rebuilt. Hope to fly mine at IRCHA next month.

By the way, the Kavan Jet Ranger really IS a trainer heli! Back in the early 1970's, all R/C heli's were trainers. With someone "holding your hand" on a trainer link, and with the heli set up correctly, there should be no problems flying her. Oh, make sure there's a hard chunk of black rubber in the center of the rotorhead and that this piece of rubber provides a stiff resistance to the rotor blades wanting to seesaw. If left loose, hovering will be extremely difficult.

Good luck!

Additional Info...

The flybar paddles seen in the pictures are wood and very light-weight. Add either flybar weights or replace the paddles with heavy units from a modern, 60-90 size heli. You don't want or need 3D paddles, they're too light.

The main blades need a very careful inspection for damage at the root. Most Kavan blades had a system installed that allowed physical restraint of lead-lag motion via a steel tongue that protruded from the very root-end of the blade. This tongue sat between a bolt at the front and rear of the blade grip, making its location somewhat adjustable in alignment. Problem comes from this restraint allowing the blade to fatally split if the slightest bump is made to the locked (restrained) blade. The tongue acts like a wedge under unwanted movement and if left unchecked, will let the damaged blade fling off into the Bright Blue N.C sky. Your blades seem to be the "Expert" parts with the wide chord and weighted tip. If so, they're intended to be flown free swinging and you shouldn't have to be too concerned about damage to the roots.

There's a thousand things I could tell you about the heli but I'm out of time.
