Scale Model RC Helicopters > my new Kavan JetRanger

eaglespiritHeliman - Location: Fayetteville NC -
Just picked up this vinatge 1970's Kavan JetRanger for $500. I'm gonna change her scheme to Charlotte NC Police "Snoopy' of that period. I hafta change all her electronic because they're all analog, and won't work with my 2.4 digital system. She needs a drive belt and she's missing a stab @ the moment, but that's lil thing.

I did some research before I bought her and found that parts are available from Americanrcheli.com (bought out Kavan).

I first saw one of these in Barcelona Spain when I was in port there while serving in the US Marines in 1974, and knew then I had to have one! I've not been into these rc heli's long and for some reason the lil electrics didn't really excite me...but this one does! I hope I can find another scale pilot in my area that'll help learn the ropes on manipulating this beauty through the bright blue North Carolina skies.

Wow looks great! I think the fuse alone is worth $500! Great find.

Keep us posted on your changes( however not much is needed).

maintenance

I took her down this afternoon for some much needed maintenance...no tellin' how long it's been since she was in the air, right? The drive and pinion were kinda gunked up, so I cleaned 'em up, (scraping away old deteriorated belt and fuel), and ran some trans. fluid into the carb to loosen up the engine, a nice old Webra 61. Greased all the shaft's n' gears . All the old servos are analog, so I'm gonna upgrade them, reciever and gyro,(which by the way she didn't use one), for my RDS8000.

I was contemtemplating repaintin' her to match Charlotte NC PD's old Snoopy, but it's original custom paint,(and a nice paint job too), so I think I'll scuttle that idea. However I did remove the reg. number that was on her side. Hueydriver came by to check her out n' got me to thinkin' about keepin' her original, since she IS antique. I'm takin' her over to his place out n' the country Sunday, so we can see how she flies...and I can begin flying lessons, LOL

It will lean to the left in a hover, thats a bit disconcerting for those of us that are used to the right hand lean.

Devil Dog, nice bird. I think you made a good decision keeping her the original colors. That thing really looks good. You have to post some in flight pics. That thing is definitely old school but in great shape.

Translating tendency. It happens when the tail rotor pushes the helicopter sideways, they all do it, even the real ones. Most models have a right hand (clockwise looking down) rotation main rotor so the tail is pushing the helicopter to the left, they lean a bit to the right to compensate.

The Kavan is left hand rotation so the tail rotor is pushing it to the right so it will lean left. If you're used to the right hand tilt, the first time you see it leaning the other way you are thinking that you're fighting the trim, its just weird to see till you get used to it.

You've flown before? Because that thing will be a handful for someone that knows how to fly.

I am from Greensboro, nc

and the jet ranger was my second machine, and I had the 3rd or fourth
one in the usa at the time.

Learned to fly on the 505, and schluter cobra...

No worries flying it, it is absolutely rock solid, like a Hirobo
eagle, and was mechnanically and aerodynamically way ahead of it's time...it even had correct swash ball matched heights all around,
for correct swash geometry...

have fun,

michael

learning to fly....

I don't have a lot of airtime. I got bit by the bug back in Sept, and have a lil time with the CX. I'm still quite green, but I think I've found someone that'll teach me. Got some sim time as well, but..

I've been wantin' to fly RC heli's for eons, and now my time has come. I'm not gonna jump right in and try to fly this beast,(or lose $500.00 on the attempt). Gonna practice on my small heli's first (axe cp,cx,LMH 117), and become more proficient. I saw this baby, and absolutly was not gonna pass on her. It may take me months or even years before I can really' handle her...so be it.

Huey driver's goin' to check her out real good, replace any defective or missin' parts. and set her up for flight. Then he's gonna teach me 'HOW" to fly her. I'm so excited!! It may take months or even years to learn to handle her...so be it! If nothin' else I'll hang her in my shop...just look at. LOL

I'll keep yawl posted on our progress in the near future, so stay tuned...
...and thanks guys for your input and support.

Had two of them , both flew very well , but do remember that the clutches used to slip , these were modified by an engineering shop , and were fine after that. Will dig the photo's out and post them later.

Don't Wait Too Long!!!!!

eaglespirit,
You are absolutely correct in learning to fly on something else and waiting to maiden your great new find (nice looking heli!!!:cool
But don't take too long to get it off the ceiling and get it off the skids.... there is nothing like a nice "scaler" to make you day of flying!!!!!!!!!!!

Best of Luck with it..... and it sounds as if you may have a GOOD teacher too..... nice addition to have!!!!

Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

never flown?

Huey Driver's been workin' HARD on gettin' this bird in shape. We changed out the servos 'n installed a new drive belt. Strange, the belt alignment's not correct...maybe that's why the old one was shredded. This kit wasn't assembled properly so there's a good chance the previous owner fried the belt before he ever got it in the air. Hmmmmmmmm....1970's Kavan JetRanger...never flown...I think I got a great deal!

belt

Thanks guys, ran into a snag...Americanrcheli says the belt for this bird's a 12 mm...WRONG!! we've been awaitin' the arrival of this belt since day one...only to find out it's too wide! Now I gotta locate a drive belt for this baby. I keep bein' told that this's not a 'trainin' bird' n' "I can't learn to fly on it". I SAY...SURE I CAN! With the right co-pilot...I'm sure it'll be no problem. OK...I'm 54 yrs old...but old dogs can learn new tricks.

Just in case you need help finding a drive belt, take a look at http://www.stockdriveproducts.com and you can search for the belt that you need. They stock a very large variety and will likely have what you need.

Good luck with the project. It looks very nice.
