OldSkoolXcell60.....If I read your post correctly you're saying that this helicopter is a great helicopter but in it's current condition it's setup like crap? Once I get it and get it setup correctly, it will be a awesome helicopter! Sound right? Thanks!

I've got three of the 60's from that era and really enjoy each of them. One of them is actually pretty similar to what you have there and is also running a YS61 ST2 (I'd be glad to offer any help I can with that motor setup). The one which is getting the most use is one fitterd with an OS70SZ.

It is my opinion that when you are buying a used model you give it a thorough look through, even more so with a Miniature Aircraft product. I say this because of their complexity and the tolerances that the components are made with. Further affecting your situation is the age of the model and the lack of knowledge of the previous owner.

The fan shroud supports are assembled inverted in one of your pics and the check valve should be post-crankcase, not inline to the carb. These are the obvious things in the pic but there is no telling what else could be set up in error. Give it a good look over and/or partial strip down (for bearings, gear backlash, clutch spacing, delrin bushings in the fan etc).

OldSkoolXcell60 .... I really respect your input and all the guys input here on the forum. Me with no MA experience with their helicopters, am I getting myself into something that a non-ma guy wants to get into? This is that fine line betwwen a great helicopter and someone that has experience with this great helicopter. The only support I have right now is this forum. I want it but just don't want to get something dated that I'm in over my head in! Thanks!

you really can't go wrong

If you have any basic heli set-up skills, which it sounds like you do. You'll be fine. You won't regret the purchase. I sure do miss mine.

The bottom line is that I'm going to get this heli for what it is and from whom it is made by! With that being known I have the support here on this forum (Thank You!) to make this X-cell helicopter one of the best that I've ever had. Hopefully with the recent events with the hobby shop I can still get this X-cell. I'll keep you all posted in the next few days. Either way I thank all of you that have given me advice and feedback on this particular MA model! Thanks!

Update

Well I stopped by the hobby shop this morning. Sign on the door that they're temporarily closed until a new manager was found. Stuck around for a few and the owner showed up. A few other guys showed up and one of the guys was the one that has the X-cell for sale. I asked him if he would take $400 for the helicopter and he thought about it for a minute and then said ya! I'll let it go for $400. I then started talking to him more about the helicopter and he said that the helicopter has never been flown. He built it and put all these upgrades on it and never flown it. The engine is new also. He then said that he'll bring in the plans, all the other documentation and the orginial box and everything he has for the helicopter. He did confirm that the model started out as a 1003-CT but he started upgrading everything. I'm so excited and nervous all in one. I'm getting the best deal that I've ever gotten and an awesome machine that is going to be a huge challenge. I've though about passing this deal up and just waiting until I'm ready again for a nitro heli and getting a Vibe50 or TRex600N. I think that would be a big mistake after finding out that this helicopter has never been in the air. I need to start doing my homework on this helicopter and reading up on setups. Some people have said I'll need a DX7 for this heli. Is this true or will my DX6i work starting out? If not I'm going to but my DX6i in the classifieds and get the DX7. Thanks!

Sweet, Sweet, Sweet!

That sounds like an incredible deal, congratulations. Even better to get all the documents, I'm sure you'll be very happy. Probably a good idea to read over and maybe even strip down the heli and rebuild it from the ground up- or get some good help in doing so.
PS if yu decide it's too much I'll gladly give you what you pay, plus shipping, plus a finder's fee. Even will toss in some of my Grandma's home made cookies.
You can't go wrong on this deal.

First off,, Congrats.. YEAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

As for your radio,, Yes a 6 channel radio will fly this with no problem,, But you wont be able to add things like GV-1 or anything for that matter,, you will use all the channels with Throttle, ailerons, collective, elevator, rudder/gyro, then HH or normal mode... that fills your radio.. I learned on a JR 6ch radio, but I have a JR 9303 now.. So here is another choice you need to make,, Man,, this hobby is full of choices...

yeppers....

Your DX6 is fine. I never used more that 6 channels when I owned mine (5 of 'em - before all these new fangled electronic goodies!!). You ABSOLUTELY STOLE THIS MACHINE. I would do as stated above. Strip the ENTIRE machine down and rebuild per the manual. If this guy never flew it, it probably means he was not an experienced pilot and therefore I would be suspect of his build abilities. These machines are very well built and engineered and they are not that hard to put together. Plus by rebuilding it you will gain a lot of knowledge about this particular machine. You will NOT be disappointed. It's as solid as a rock.

Well the guy that currently owns the helicopter has experience building MA helicopters. This guy went to the 3 day R/C helicopter school down in Florida that I think MA use to have. This school taught you how to build/setup and fly MA helicopters in three days. So I think this helicopters has been built correctly but I plan on stripping it down and rebuilding. This will only get me better familiar with the helicopter. I'll post some pictures of all the goodies later this afternoon once I get the helicopter home.

Tear it apart. Since the boom struts (small mistake) and the side fan brackets are not installed correctly, there is no telling what else is off besides the YS check valve in the fuel in line.

I have a 1003CT that was upgraded to a SE and a YS80, you will love it!

Picked the heli up today!

I picked the heli up today along with an extra primed canopy and some documentation. On my way home from the hobby shop I got a call from the previous owner of the X-cell. He informed me that he had a box of parts for this helicopter and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff like a couple canopies, pipes, side rails and so on! He said he just wanted me to have everything that he had for this helicopter. I expressed how appreciative I was for everything additional he was giving me. What a bonus!!! I'm picking everything up next Tuesday so I'll post some pictures of the final lot. The previous owner of this helicopter is a super nice guy that I think is just happy that someone is getting the helicopter that appreciates what MA X-Cell helicopters are. Just awesome!!!

First thing I'm wanting to do is remove the engine and dis-assemble it and see what the insides look like. I also want to lube everything down with some after-run oil. I'm not planning on getting this heli in the air ASAP! This is probably covered in the plans or manual but does the fan shroud get removed with the engine? After I get the engine removed and the plans/manual and the extra parts I'll start going over everything inspecting the assembly.

I'm looking for recommendations for servo's, receiver and gyro and anything else I will need to complete this helicopter the correct way. I may be getting a DX7 radio but either way I'll have a DX6i or DX7. Thanks!

Careful with the lube..

Again congratulations, you got a great deal. Here's something to consider before tearing down the YS engine, most things I've read say to be very careful with using petroleum-based after-run oil in YS engines- The diaphragm and o-rings may not be compatible and will swell into useless jelly-like blobs. The YS engine has a pressure-regulating pump diaphragm in the part under the carb section, I saw one guy post a pic of his diaphragm swollen to twice it's original size.
Synthetic oils should be OK- maybe somebody with more YS engine experience can chime in and give their opinions. Since it's a new engine I'd be inclined to maybe just pull off the backplate and have a look at the rear bearing, if you can, for any rust, then put it back together and run as is.
Chers,
Vince

vinver....Thanks for the info. The previous owner said he put after run oil in the engine after every run. I was under the impression that the engine was new but I guess it isn't. I'll just pull the back plate and do an inspection of the bearings. When pulling the engine on this X-cell, does the fan shroud come out with the engine? I haven't taken a closer look yet on how to remove the engine. Thanks!

The fan shroud comes apart in 2 pcs. remove the muffler and the shroud braces. the there are screws on the top and the bottom of the shroud where the 2 halfs meet. after that just remove the motor bolts and slide it down off the clutch. make sure you check the rubber dampners for wear. they should be 1 pc. if they are 2 round pcs replace with new one pc units. I have a YS 61ST2 in one of those machines and never use after-run oil (but then again I run it frequently and for the last run I always starve it to shut down). There are specific cautionary notes to the effect of not using petroleum-based after run oil to prevent compromising the integrety of the motor. There are some YS pilots using a full synthetic for the purposes of after run oil. Congrats on that heli btw.

Update

Well haven't really had the time to start completing the helicopter. Been flying my Gaui 200 and Blade 400 learning to fly better. I'm getting the itch to start working on the X-Cell and starting to make a list of electronics and parts I need to complete it. Stay tuned! The build/setup questions are about to start. Thanks!
