e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Need help with pinion on Align motor

Hi everyone,

I have a 3DX 400 Shogun clone that has been "on ice" for a couple years now. I got around to putting it together, and discovered that my Align motor with 13T pinion (3mm shaft) would not fit all the way "up" into the frame. Basically, I think the pinion is too long. I actually ordered the pinion through a vendor on Ebay, it holds with an allen screw. I have attached pictures, the pinion itself is itself about 11 mm in height.

Should I cut the pinion with my Dremel tool? I would have to cut the top portion since the allen bolt is at the bottom. Are there any good pinions that are 3mm, but shorter? The top of the pinion is against the blue metal belt drive pulleys, and I certainly don't want to have metal on metal grinding of the pinion against that. In fact, there is no way at the moment that the top of the align motor can contact the bottom the engine mount (due to the tall 11mm pinion).

Help!

You could look into mounting the motor with spacers between it and the mount, to keep the pinion from extending up too far.

Or use the dremel and cut the pinion, if that buys you enough clearance.

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

I think I'll try the dremel, extending the mount with shims will cause the mount to be weak.

Make sure you keep using that heat sink.....those align 420LF's run like toasters.

Oh yeah, got it installed now. Just have to get the collective pitch servo connected and away it will go. Right now, I have a lot of RPM, but no collective (yet).

I would add another heat sink to the other side.

The bottom line is having fun.
