Computer Flight Simulators > Inexpensive transmitter for Phoenix?

A friend of mine is a bit short on funds but wants to get started on Phoenix while saving for a real heli.

I'd like to know what ideas people might have for finding a suitable mode-2 transmitter that will work with Phoenix. It doesn't matter if it's cheap plastic or comes in a cereal box. We just need five channels minimum, mode 2, no receiver required, and preferably no notches on the throttle stick (but this can probably be fixed). I have a DX7 and it's great, but that's way out of my friend's budget right now.

I think Phoenix has support for throttle and pitch curves built-in, so the transmitter can be pretty 'dumb'.

Second-hand is fine (probably even preferable), but I need to know what to look for first.

Make sure you don't get a transmitter that has builtin mixing that can't be turned off. This rules out most of the transmitters that come with RTF CP helis. Phoenix does have the ability to demix a CCPM signal, but the demixing doesn't work flawlessly.

The Falcon 3D heli has mechanical mixing, so if you can find someone selling their old Falcon 3D transmitter that would work, and it already has the right plug for the Phoenix cable, with no adaptor required.

Also, I know you said 5 channels, but really you only need 4 channels, since you can program in throttle curves in the sim, and use keyboard shortcuts for extra features like landing gear and flaps. I say this because it's easy to find cheap 4 channel transmitters with no mixing like this one:

I used the 4 channel transmitter that came with my Blade CX with Phoenix for learning heli flying, and it worked fine.

That's a very good point - Phoenix can do the throttle/collective mixing itself. Thanks for the advice!

If you're definately getting involved in heli's just buy the right tx from the get-go.

I love my DX7.

Yes, I understand that sentiment because that's exactly what I did. However my friend really can't afford NZ$800 to buy Phoenix and a DX7 at this time due to personal circumstances. If one of these cheaper TXs will work, then we can get the cost down to NZ$300 or less.

I use a 4 channel JR radio. It was $25. I have a buddy of mine with an extra one if you want it. No fifth channel but everything else is great.

Thanks for the offer Eyefly but I will politely decline as my friend has decided to save up for a DX7 anyway, since he is busy with house renovations for the next few months.
