HIROBO X-spec - Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > How do I know when I should retire my Shuttle ZX?

I've been building a new heli for my OS .70. Mostly been flying an MX400 and the ol' Shuttle. Can't say enough how nice it is to be dealing with a modern radio vs the T6XA I started with on the Shuttle. I've decided to at least fix what I did wrong the first time through. I'm updating the servos to moderately fast digitals with a pretty quick tail servo. (using some old S148 servos with serious slop!) updating the original GWS PG01 gyro to a Telebee HH. (yes, 401 considered, wanted the TB for other reasons). Engine is the older OS .32 and still going strong.

Bottom line, it still is limited with throws, cheaper plastics, and really a lot of slop that once I'm flying the new heli, not sure what I should do with the Shuttle, or if I'll even be interested in flying it.

Should I pull the stuff out and put it all in a shuttle plus?
Update my ZX with shuttle plus pieces?
Keep it as a historic relic/time capsule?
Sell it for parts?
Make it a scale project?
Bury it in the back yard hoping for an MRC tree?

I like the fuel economy of the .30, I just think I'm getting addicted to higher performance.

Back to the title, retire or upgrade is the real question....

"Bury it in the back yard hoping for an MRC tree?"

I've buried a few Hirobo helis so I can say from experience that this option will leave you a little disappointed.

It doesn't matter. You can still get parts for it. I've retire mine because when I got back to this hobby, the engine was seized and I was not sure on replacement parts and did not know about RR. I figure just go all new. I got the EVO50. Lots more power than a 30 size.

BTW, I did speak to Jeff Green a few years back after I crashed the EVO and wanted to fly right away. I asked about upgrade parts for my old Shuttle ZX for a shaft start and some other items like the main blade grip because the old one had a smaller bolt dia and the new blades had a larger hole. I just inserted a sleeve for it. He told me it would be cheaper to just buy a new Shuttle. It would have more bearings and better parts than my old one.

What heli are you puting that OS70 in?

Fix it up to look nice and fly reasonably well, then make it a hanger queen. Nothing like antiques for nastalgia and the new toys to rock with.

Man, I miss the eighties.

A while back, I parted out my Shuttle zxx to fund a Trex and am now regretting it. While it wasn't the fastest, most powerful or nimble machine, it was still a Hirobo. Don't do it, hindsight is 20/20.
On top of it all, I hated the t-rex and sold it so now I don't have either one.

i've been upgrading my Shuttle so I can use it in a scale project.

If it's gonna happen it'll happen up there!

Well, burying it sounds like it's right out. Unless we just haven't put them in deep enough yet....

Really, I think scale seems like the best option. As freakyreef pointed out, it's not the fastest nor most nible, but a mellow heli I've already invested years in sure sounds like a perfect scale heli to me!

I did teach get myself into forward flight with this machine before there were simulators and I didn't know any local heli fliers. Seemed like half my 'landings' ended up with boom strikes.

B.T.D.T. - the .70 is headed for a Pantera, nearly complete.

hmmm, carve out a sweet body mold and fiberglass up a scale body. Just have to pick the right heli to model.

as a Hirobo trivia side note, one of the reasons I went shuttle over Kyosho was I had the Hirobo Rockin' City 44b at the time.

I bought a retired Shuttle ZX on ebay last year. Honesty didnt know if I could get parts, just wanted a heli to play with. This has turned out to be one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. I was able to learn to fly it without the use of a simulator ( a challange I made to myself) although I did crash twice. One boom strike crash early on and 100 flights later, I dumb thumbed it into a fence at the field. My fault, that morning I heard about our field being shut down at 1PM for noise abatement reasons until further notice. I was so bent out of shape when I got to the field that I probably shouldnt have even flown. Always preflight yourself before you preflight your aircraft!

So I guess the answer to the question on weather to retire an old ZX is in the eyes and the vision of those that fly her. One mans retired heli is another mans passion and fond memories. I know one thing, I'll never be able to retire the sweet memories of the first time that old O.S. 32 barked back to life, or the first time she broke ground into a stable hover with me at the controls or the day I forgot the training gear at home and found out she flys WAY WAY WAY better without them.

Keep them Shuttles flying gents!

just fly it , as you say the shuttle is a stable heli and if you do crash your new heli then you've always got something to fly

Love my Shuttle

Hey what's not to love, it's a Hirobo. I have two. One in a Century Long Ranger Fuselage and the other is in stock configuration. For me the shuttle is one of those helis that you can burn big holes in the sky with, doing wide open smooth maneuvers or on the deck doing some fun high speed low passes. They fly great and parts are also very easy to get. I personally would not give up these 2 great old birds. Both of my Shuttles have been converted to electric sporting the Neu 1907 1.5Y, CC-HV45ESC and 6S2P A123's. After just 15 minutes of charge I'm off for another 10 to 11 minute flight.

Then when I'm in the mood, it's Trex E600 time!

Turns out the time to retire is when the starter pully wears out. I can't get enough grip with the belt to start the shuttle now. It's been short but sweet revival. I'm pulling all the electronics I just upgraded to put in a replacement heli, and will probably part out the shuttle. We've had a long history, but it's time to move on.
