Safety - RC Helis are not toys > How to sell a helicopter

Molokaiboy's policy for selling nitro or large electric helicopters to new fliers is to refuse to sell starting equipment or batteries to the new pilot until he is confident that the flier can start, stop, and hover the heli safely. He also goes over maintenance procedures and troubleshooting, and constantly stresses safety.

When he is confident that the flier knows enough to be safe, he'll sell the starting equipment and turn the flier loose. By that time the new flier knows the guys at the field, and stands a good chance of being successful.

My LHS does something like this. He is often mistaken for an a-hole for wanting people to succeed in this hobby. He has training sessions, sims, etc. and if you can't fly, he tells you. Point-blank. I was all gung ho about getting a heli about 8 years ago and he put me on the sim and I had no patience for it. I kind of felt he was a jerk, but had my best interest in mind. I went back 3 years later and I buy most, if not all, my heli's and planes from him. He is very knowledgeable and I respect him and his decisions. This is something you just cannot get online. Keep that in mind the next time you save 2 bucks by ordering on the net. Yeah, you might save a few bucks, but when the LHS isn't there anymore due to no support, then...........

No witty signature at this time. Please check back later......

I think that its a good idea -

There are a lot of folks that will listen to you and pay attention to safety but of course we all learn anyway the hard way on a lot like "Idle1 on start" - that wakes you up and warms the clutch liner.

But some people will just jump right in, fail immediately and then you get the blame.

Good idea, and proof of insurance before selling would be a good idea aswell.

We at the LHS try our best to give our customers the very best customer support for everything we sell. Safety is Our Number One concern especially when it comes to "Newbies" and Helicopters. Many New comers are unaware of the Hazards of these Aircrafts. I want to ensure the Safety of them and everyone around them before letting them go out on there own.
