Sorry for your loss, I cant imagine what thats like.

Personally, I have always found cancer to be a rather fascinating disease. Most dieseases are caused by damage to some part of the body or some type of deficiency, but cancer is what happens when a healthy body(or considerably healthy I guess) just self destructs. I dont know why but I just find that incredible.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?

I'm no MD, but I imagine that cancers are simply a run-away-train version of the naturally-occurring random mutation characteristic of most biological organisms -- the function which, combined with natural selection, has shaped our evolution and the evolution of all other species over great lengths of time.

For species to have this characteristic ultimately leads to an enhanced ability to adapt to changing or worsening conditions over shorter periods of time, thereby increasing a particular species chances of surviving. The downside of course is that when the biological 'governor' which keeps a lid on the rate of mutation malfunctions, or some external influence (a carcinogen) becomes involved, the mutation rate within that particular organism (person) increases to a point that a cancer occurs which can be fatal.

Cancers, in my mind (at this point anyway), are the price various species pay for the very biomechanisms that work in a species' favor to promote survival.

I'm sad beyond words at the loss of my sis-in-law, but I believe I understand the how and why of it. Along with my brother, I believe we'll be able to convey some of the logic of this to my nieces and nephew -- when the time is right.

Ump, so sorry for your loss too. This is not a thing I would've chosen to 'share' with anyone.

Topher, thanks.
