Success!

Something I completely forgot to mention. When you hold the autorotation clutch parts in your hands, outside of the mechanics, (old clutch, not new one), did you happen to detect any drag of the inner shaft when rotating it in the unlocking direction?

You stated that the insides of the clutch looked OK but I can't tell if you knew the details to look for, so under the circumstances it would look OK.

Remember how I was telling you about the springs pushing on the sides of the clutch rollers? That spring force is absolutely critical to the consistent locking function of the clutch. Some experience is needed to tell how healthy those springs are but by having a new clutch in-hand, making the comparison is easy.

The new clutch will produce an obvious drag on the inner shaft when turning it in the unlocking direction. An older clutch may have noticeably less drag and this is due to the springs being distorted or over-squashed, removing the needed tension used to force the rollers into the wedging ramps. Probably too late now to have you perform the test but remember this for the future.

What kind of life are you getting out of your one ways? Mine went on me today. I had between 4 & 5 gallons on it.

That can't be good!

Three Caliber 30's, two of them flying since mid 2003, one since May 2005.

A Caliber 5 that's got two season's worth of flying on it, and Caliber 4 that has about six months of flying.

I've only replaced two one-way clutches, those being in the oldest of two of the three Caliber 30's. I replaced them in 2007.

As I stated in one of the posts it was a new cal 30 one way I had installed. Every thing checked out aok for everything you mentioned above, but the new cal 5 part did have more drag when free wheeling. I think the cal 30 one way and wrong lube may have had a little to do with this as maybe the internal springs may not be as strong as the cal 5 part. Tom

I'm going to do it your way Dave with my new one way bearing. I used Tri Flow on the one which went out and will go with no lube on my new one. You are getting some good life out of yours. Of coarse Pilot technique and knowledge probably factor into it somewhere .

Brent,
I've been averaging with C-5 one-way bearing between 17 to 20 gallons before they seize up. I've had one that slipped in flite under a heavy load.
My Caliber 30 has somewhere around 140 hours flite time and its the original one-way bearing.

I managed to fly a couple of tanks today on my Cal. After the first flight, I checked the one way and it was sticking. I freed it up and flew another time. Upon landing it was working ok. What a perfect day to fly at my club field, at around 3 there wasn't any wind at all. I managed to fly 5 tanks between the Cal and the Sceadu before I had to split. Tom

May I suggest something?

Hey Tom,

Since you are still having problems, and I believe you're still using the same inner clutch countershaft, I suspect the outside diameter of the shaft is slightly too small. The rollers in the clutch are very sensitive to their location on the little ramps formed inside the outer shell of the clutch. If the shaft is too small, the rollers ride too close to the inner edge of each ramp, making them more likely to tilt or go out-of-parallel.

I don't know what measuring tools you have access to but it would be cool to measure the over running cluch running surface of the countershaft and compare it to the diameter of the fresh surface of the same shaft or that of a new shaft. A reduction of even 1/2 of a thousandth of an inch (about .01mm) can make all the difference in the world.

The fit of the countershaft into its 8 X 16mm bearings can really tell the story too. The tighter the shaft is to sliding through those bearings will give you some idea of the countershaft size. You may need to buy a new shaft, one that hopefully is on the larger side of the 8mm diameter tolerance. My experience with the old Concepts and Nexus heli's told me that the bigger the autorotation shaft (fit inside the auto clutch) the more reliable the mechanism.

I'm out of "2 cents" donations for now. Good luck.

I had checked the diameter when I had it apart and it was the same from top to bottom. Every thing is working ok as of now and I will keep an eye on it and see if anything changes. Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated. Tom

Here are a few photos of me and my buddy Scott's helis in action from yesterday. A nice gentalman named Harry was at our flying field taking pictures of Short Eared Owls, and decided to take some of our birds.

Those don't look like short-eared owls to me, but your camera fellow has some pretty good equipment and skills.

Nice pics.

Dang-it tommytt1, is your photographer for hire? I need good flying pix but I find it tough (but not impossible) to fly and shoot at the same time. What's his or her number?
