Safety - RC Helis are not toys > glove recommendations for solvents

The two most common solvents we
use, isopropyl alcohol and acetone
are actually fairly nasty and if you
value your longterm health, you should
consider using gloves when handling
& using this stuff.

After doing a bunch of web searching,
the only cost effective glove that
handles both chemicals is thick (6mil+)
latex rubber or butyl rubber.

The 6mil+ latex gloves are about $11
per 100 (disposible) while a single pair of butyls
are about $17.

examples are (from mcmaster.com)
5306T55 (butyl)
6072T3 (latex)

The secret to the latex ones are the
thickness. The very thin ones dont
provide protection.

Nitrile gloves provide almost zero
protection for Acetone (although they
are good for alcohol).

How nasty is acetone? I use it all the time when building helis to de-grease the nuts & bolts but have never taken any precautions...what is going to drop off first?

How can acetone affect my health?

If you are exposed to acetone, it goes into your blood which then carries it to all the organs in your body. If it is a small amount, the liver breaks it down to chemicals that are not harmful and uses these chemicals to make energy for normal body functions. Breathing moderate- to-high levels of acetone for short periods of time, however, can cause nose, throat, lung, and eye irritation; headaches; light-headedness; confusion; increased pulse rate; effects on blood; nausea; vomiting; unconsciousness and possibly coma; and shortening of the menstrual cycle in women.

Swallowing very high levels of acetone can result in unconsciousness and damage to the skin in your mouth. Skin contact can result in irritation and damage to your skin.

The smell and respiratory irritation or burning eyes that occur from moderate levels are excellent warning signs that can help you avoid breathing damaging levels of acetone.

Health effects from long-term exposures are known mostly from animal studies. Kidney, liver, and nerve damage, increased birth defects, and lowered ability to reproduce (males only) occurred in animals exposed long-term. It is not known if people would have these same effects.

For alcohol:
HAZARD SUMMARY
* Isopropyl Alcohol can affect you when breathed in and by
passing through your skin.
* Exposure can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, mouth, and
throat.
* Overexposure may cause headaches, drowsiness, clumsiness,
unconsciousness, and death.
* Contact may irritate the skin. Repeated skin exposure can
cause itching, a rash, and drying and cracking.
* Isopropyl Alcohol is a FLAMMABLE LIQUID and a FIRE HAZARD.

Damn, too late, I got all those acetone symptoms already, except the menstrual cycle problems!

Seriously, I hadn't realised it was particularly hazardous, so thanks for the warning. I can't say I soak myself in it, but it does get on my hands. I will try to work more tidily in the future.

I'll check my medicine cabinet when I get home, however I believe the rubbing alcohol that I use every time I shave is isoproply alcohol. Surely something designed to be rubbed on the skin can't be that bad. As for acetone I'd agree that it can be pretty harsh however there are millions of women that soak their fingers in it on a weekly basis at the nail salon. All things in moderation.....

true. rubbing alcohol is iso. alcohol.
I'm not trying to alarm anyone but
on the other side of the coin, you should
know what it is you're using so you
can determine what/whether you
hsould use 'protection'. I generally
dont use anything when using alcohol
but just for my own piece of mind, I
like to use gloves for acetone.

Thanks for informative post. I knew acetone was dangerous, but I didn't know isopropyl alchohol was dangerous too.

I saw the dangers you posted on isopropyl alchohol and was wondering if there are any long term effects/damage caused by isopropyl alchohol?

Umm.. Isopropyl Alcohol AKA Rubbing Alcohol is used to cool down patients in hospitals all of the time. Especially patients with high fevers etc.. If it was dangerous to apply to the skin, hospitals wouldn't dowse their patients in it... Everything if used improperly can hurt you.. If you drink isopropyl alcohol it could be very deadly, but skin application is extremely common and recommended for fevers to help bring down temperatures etc... I doubt there is any major consequences to it other than that of an allergic reaction that some people may have.

what the warning for alcohol is for is probably prolonged exposure to the liquid. Since it evaporates in like 10 sec at most when you get it on your skin, you should be ok, but dont soak your skin in it for a long time.

What is acetone in? Is it like something you'd find in a store, like wegmans/tops (grocery store) or is it more of an auto parts thing?

Also why would you buy the expensive gloves? ($17 for 1 pair) I would assume you could get 3 or 4 uses out of the cheepo ones if you wash them off and dont let them soak in the stuff.
The cheep ones do both chemicals right?

Before making blanket statements regarding chemical safety it's always a good read and understand the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) first. Just because the hospital dowses you in something doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing. How and where a chemical is used has a lot to do with the safety as well. There's a reason why MSDS are provided.

A quick search on the web yields the following MSDS for:

Isopropyl Alcohol

Acetone MSDS

Denatured Alcohol

I use denatures alcohol instead of acetone for cleaning hardware. It works well and is not as much of a heath hazard as acetone. I also wear disposable latex gloves.

Its important that you protect yourself. Its amazing how many people never pay attention to heath concerns. They just figure it won't hurt them. Like they are uniquely different from everyone else.

Like ACE DUDE said, refer to the MSDS sheet and use the necessary protective equip.

Hey, we're modellers, we don't read safety notices, we know that if we don't know it can hurt us, then it can't. Right?

What about the fuel we use, Get it on our hands all the time. Of course the plastic our heli's are made from causes cancer according to California. So does the garden hose that we have been drinking out of since we were kids.

Oh well, at least I don't smoke, drink or do drugs.
