e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > 4MM Bolt for 550 Blades for Swift 16 question

My mate has a problem, with the high powerd motor he is using the stock 3mm blade bolts are starting to bend with the high head speed and wants to upgrade to some 550 blades. But the hole is only 3mm in diameter. So have some of your drilled bigger holes in the blade grips or done something else? Also he is using narow spacers which doesn't help the bending problem, does anyone else suffer from this?

How old is his Swift? Is it a Swift 16 or a 550 carbon? Does he have CNC grips?

Hi Ollie West, Just tell him to get the newer Swift grips. The newer grips are 4mm holes and have a little more material on them to strengthen them up

He can drill the old ones out...but risk weakening them.
For a part that's so cheap to upgrade I would not take the chance with weak grips Just MHO.

Those old 3mm grips had a lot of failures. He should upgrade ASAP.

The old 3mm grips worked great when used in the way for which they were designed - 520mm blades at rotor speeds up to 1900.

But if you want to "soup it up" and run longer, heavier blades, at higher head speeds, then you should definitely order the newer 4mm versions. Then you should be good for 560 mm blades up to 2100 or so RPM.

Hey,

I agree with whats already been said, while you could drill out the existing grips I'd just go for the newer more beefier ones.

Also, as your adding 550 mains may I also suggest fitting the metal head block if you haven't already got it.
As your friend sounds like he is now winding up the model for more serious flying, adding strength in a major area will not go amiss.

The upgraded head block is not a lot of money but assures reliability as you push the model more.
