Ran 4 packs through the king today in the gym and man is it flying sweet! And am I ever getting cocky! I did some really bad stuff today and recovered from everything. I did like 7 piros in a row and just let the heli slowly drift right as I did but by the time I decided that was enough it was moving at a pretty good clip towards a wall. I had to reign in in hard on the heli and it just about stood straight up. After that it got all crazy but with just about 2-3 controlled movements it was hovering nice again. So I did lots of stuff like that and even though I had 4 close calls with walls, I kept my cool and flew it though the rough places. That was some of my first batteries where I was flying the heli and not just trying to keep it under control. I was letting it go where it wanted and I was adjusting from that. Man was it nice.

4 packs through the Mini with the first being all setup of the new tail servo. As a note, when doing setup be sure to pay attention to how long you use a pack. With all the spin-ups and adjustments, I took my brand new Cellpro pack down to 8% on it's first run. I guess we will see how tough these packs are.

tjnguy they say in the website to use the packs carefully in the first uses and fly slow not abuse the pack. so did you buy a cellpro battery pack as well? everyone is getting those, i'm on a eye on the outrage xp packs they-re 10 dollars cheaper

I'm using the following break-in procceedure based on comments from here, HF and Wattflyer

For the first ten flights:
  • Charge at 1c, not anymore
  • Discharge at a low C rating. Hovering with my setup on the 2200mah is about 5c (one fifth of the packs capacity)
  • Discharge only to 20% to 30%

After that,let-r rip!

I wonder if running the packs just slightly low at breakin would help establish a larger powerband than just flying one easy and not showing it its max and min points? These batteries do learn from our flying and charging times.

If you have a nitro can I borrow it?

NiCads are far more sensitive the "break-in", but are fine to be mostly depleted. With Lipos, I'm more concerned hurting the pack then getting the optimal discharge out of them. With Lipos there seems to be alot of urban legends out there. Storage proceedure (voltage and temp), break in proceedures, its a lot of voodoo. Not a lot of solid test results. Having just lost a young one (pack that is) I'm trying to be more careful in how I handle my packs from now on.

Ive ran mine down to like 8 or 9% a very few times and have not seen any difference in power or longevity. Longevity being mostly the cheap megapower now that battery I constantly overdischarged and flew at below freezing temps and got a few hundred flights out of it. So like you said I think its all voodoo other than expensive packs have more power than cheap ones.

I too am being more careful with $50 packs.

Hovering through complete 1800 ma packs now. Heli is trimmed out nice. Brain is in a heli-induced coma when she just sits there in the air with all those parts whirring away.

Done a TINY bit of forward flight, and when I get to the trees I slowly back it up to toward where I started. Interesting to see how quick she makes headway when I tip her nose forward. Done a little side-in practice too.

Tried some nose in, but when I got it rotated about 10 degrees I came to my senses and turned it back around...for now I'll save nose in for the Lama.

Motor and batts are just warm when its time to land. Coming back into the garage with no broken parts is a thrill in itself.

Grooving on the coolness of it all now that I'm getting some fun out of the investment.

Had a bad day cause heli fell out of the air for no reason. No damage that I can find though so I guess that is good news and not bad for a 6ft fall with the blades still spinning. Other than the whole heli falling out of the air thing, I ran 3 batteries and then had to call it a day because I was just not feeling it. There was some bad juju going on today. Tomorrow will be better

Edit with much better news!
So I just got back from the street light over by the school. The ol' king is running great! I ran both 1350s and both CellPro 2100s through him and he was a delight to fly. The wind was come and go, and the skeeters sucked, but overall I had a great time and by the end I was feeling all kinds of cocky again. That's where I like to be, cocky. Wow that didn't come out right ... well you know what I mean.

Just flew a daybreak sortie, and I am pleased to report that for the first time since the final flight of the CF blades, blade tracking held true throughout the flight.

It's apparently controversial, but the only thing I did was reverse the order of the thrust bearing races into their (arguably) proper positions.

I ran 6 packs through the king today at the gym and all went well, no heli falling out the air or anything. I spent the first one re-tracking the blades and they are still not great. I am in the place where a half turn, yes I do half turns, makes red blade high one way and red blade low the other. It is only really a problem for the first minute of a pack as the head speed is a bit faster. Once it slows a bit the tracking has less negative effect on the heli. The next two were just playing with the heli but the last three had a purpose, side and nose in. I started by running about half of the 3rd pack side in. I would run left nose for a minute and then right nose for a minute. Then On the 4th pack I started to rotate around to nose in, hold it for a second and then bail. By the end of that pack I was holding it for about 5-10 seconds but I still would loose it. Then the 5th pack was almost all nose in and the last half or so was all in one hover. By that time I was getting thing down and I hovered the whole 6th pack nose in and within probably a 10 sq.ft area. I just took off tail in and then rotated around. It is coming along nicely!

WooHoo Nose-in!!!

Oh and of course my charger got all weird again, so I couldn't charge up a 7th and 8th pack It is working ok now though

Got 7 flights in today. Don't usually get to fly mid-week but managed it today. Still working in the Toolman piros. Clockwise is the easy direction. CCW is the hard direction. Around the 4th battery the heli got much louder and developed a vibration. I'm guessing I've lost a bearing, but I can't tell which one. I just ordered some Boca bearings for the tail box. I've been meaning to replace the Esky bearings back there anyway. I have a spare main bearing, so when I get some time I'll tear it down and check them out. Its probably a good time to soak and re-oil the main bearings anyway. Since I've been logging I have 330 minutes on the bird. Total time is probably closer to 3 times that.

I put all 6 of my batteries through the king today in the gym. I mostly worked on nose-in and I did my first nose-in take offs. Half the time I take off just perfectly and the other half I am all over but I can regain control quickly enough that I don't have to set it back down. I made a quick video of me taking off, hovering and then landing to prove that I can actually do it

I am so happy to have reached this milestone!!! And I am getting really good at transitioning from tail to nose in and anywhere in between. My only weakness right now is right side-in and nose-in higher than 3ft off the ground. Those things will jsut take some more practice.

Oh and I called FMA to ask about my charger and why it is acting funny. Howard there was cool and listened to me ramble on and said he thinks it is a power supply issue but if it keeps up they would replace the unit for me. Plus I am having an issue with the charger not sensing my Mega 1350 packs and sometimes charging them at 4A. He said that is absolutely not an issue. A 1350 pack can easily be charged at 3C as long as it stays balanced and the 4S will do that just fine. I know that other folks out there are pushing their batteries but to hear it from him was different. So what the hell, I guess I will just let the charger charge everything at 4A.

Chris, that's excellent progress! Nose-in is huge milestone, congrats.

I stripped down my HBK2 to the bearings. The main bearings are fine, but as expected the tail box bearings are notchy. It'll be some time next week before the Boca bearings arrive, so I'll try soaking them and re-lubing to see if I can get a few more flights out of them. Man are those things stuck in the tailboxes.
