No thats not quite a fair assessment. the gy240 has less of everything all it does is rate or HH and gain with a servo reverse all on the unit no remote capabilities. It will work with a digital servo Ive been told but cant take advantage of its speed. Its also only good for a 30 size or smaller heli. The Gy401 has a few more bells and whistles but must have a programmable remote to use it other than that I dont know anymore than I read in its manual I have 2 gy240's just because of their simplicity.

Over the winter I am going to buy parts for my 500 or 600 heli (next years project),
I figure a good gyro is a good first purchase because I can use it on my 450 for now.

I have a dx6i,
that would be sufficient to set up the gy401
right?

It's only $20 more so no reason not to get it.

I know good advice when I ignore it ;)

exactly will work great and you cant outgrow it very easily you may just need someone to help you with the setup. I am just a simpleton therefore I got the 240. You may want to check the classifieds. I am sure there are people dumping the 401's for the gy611 combo $399.

Managed to get 2 flights in on the new Rex500 before I lost the light.
This was really it's maiden flight as up until now just trimming/getting used to it flights.
It flies beautifully and
I love this heli already.

I flew today,
and later got my blade 400 tail slider and installed it.

It's great,
It will slide the full range now.

I had to mod a couple things to get the full range and set the "neutral" position in the middle of the tail shaft,
but now that that's done
I should have some wicked sick piro rates.

And now,
A question.

Would you take your 500 to a public park,
(big and open, hardly ever anyone there, and when there is it's just a person running their dog)?

Just as a matter of curiosity,
and wanting to share the story below

I was reading up on this trying to figure out what is the biggest heli thats safe to take into public.

One guy had an answer I liked a lot (although it rules out a 500 or bigger for me)

He said (basically)
If you wouldn't step in between the heli and a bystander to protect them from your heli,
then it's too big.

I could take a hit from my 450 (already had a few light encounters already),
and it would hurt like hell with scars aplenty,
but I could survive it easily.

Um a 450 would be the biggest "safe" heli, but when I fly my 500 at my local park, I try to get there EARLY in the morning as I can to avoid people. And if there is anyone there, they use come by, and watch me fly and ask the common questions

Yes and No

I have a very large park I fly at and my buddy and I try to get down there as soon as it is light in the mornings and then, when it is deserted, I fly the 500.
If I go later or after work, if there are people about I fly the 450 or not at all if the people are to close or too many.

We also fly at a smaller ball park and will not fly the 500 there.

The park I go to is a large field with a skate park in the corner.

The empty grass field is .25 by .1 miles.

I am getting a 500 or 600 (which I know would be out) as my next heli,
and I am trying to figure this all out.

There is a local field,
but they want like $70 a year for membership,
plus you have to be AMA.

Both good ideas,
but after I spend to get the heli,
there won't be anything left for those fees.

I can get an esmart (600),
and maybe have enough left to get memberships,
or get a rex500 and maybe still fly at the park for awhile.

I am going to start buying parts over the winter,
and when I go to buy the core bird,
I will check the classifieds here.

Maybe I'll get lucky.

Not yet,
the only thing that really applied to me was the park flyer.

But I didn't wanna get that,
I guess I just wanted to wait and make sure I was serious before getting a membership.

It's on the list now,
and not far off.

parkflyer is only for like 3 or 4 pound aircraft.

I am a non AMA member I too cant afford it. But now that I am flying the raptor 30 thats 550 in electric talk I may be buying it soon.

topic was discussed here.

Hmmmmmm.
I just did some research,
and my local AMA field is only twice as long and twice as wide as the park I go to.

Granted that means it's 4 times as big,
but when you consider that you will be sharing airspace,
it suddenly feels smaller.

Although,
collision avoidance might be another fun challenge in itself.

HR you dont realize how lucky you are I wish I had a heli club nearby regardless of size my nearest is 2.5hr drive. I mean who needs a half a mile to fly a baby electric heli you can fly indoors? I fly my nitro in a ballfield thats only 275' to the wall. That said the comradeship and the help you could possibly get could be golden.

Oh no,
I realize
Every time I fly,
I think about how lucky I am to be doing this.

I was talking about the club for a 500 or 600,
you could fly that indoors,
given a large enough venue,
but

I get my 450 to speeds of 40-50 mph,
and I need room for that

A 500 or 600,
I would really need some room.

I was just looking at the gaui 550,
its a bit cheaper than the rex 500.

Oh,
and I am gonna check out that club,
but I hear they kinda turn their noses up at electrics.

I fly my 500 in my garage and backyard, and I prefer not fly at parks. The stray dogs and children always a concern. Maybe I'm funny, and perhaps a little anti-social, but when I'm flying I'd rather be alone or with other heli pilots. I have flown at a park, alone, and found the down time between packs was a little boring. With an electric, there's not much to do but let the nerves and motor cool.

At least when I'm a home, I can stop by RR and get something to drink between packs. At a club you can chat with the other pilots, look at and discuss each others helis. The main reason I went with a 500 was because I wanted to join a club.

I flew 5 packs today,
I always warm up with nose in hovering now.

I'm still having problems with my turns,
I still get confused as I bring the heli around towards me,
if the heli starts to bank to steep into the turn,
I almost always react by making it worse.

It has gotten better since the nose in practice
A. because it doesn't happen everytime
B. I haven't crashed because of it, I have been able to correct in time.

I"m an AMA member cause I also fly fixed wing.
I much prefer to fly at the field but I do so at Lunch and before work when its not crowded. If I ever get time (have not all summer) to fly on a weekend, the helis are staying home. I hate flying w/ more than 1 other aircraft. I hate flying w/ a Heli too!
Right now, I like the field cause there are other people to talk to and at Lunch, most are Heli pilots. Heli clubs are great too cause you got someone to talk Heli to. I don't have a dedicated Heli club close to me though. I like flying at a local ball field but It's mostly hovering. It's also really sheltered from the wind as it's down a hill and trees all around. My flying field however is like a wind magnet. Its at the top of a hill and seems to always be 5mph more wind there than anywhere else. The advantage of my field however is the tall grass at the edges of the runway. It would be like crashing into hay. Before you join a club, visit it at the times you think you might fly. You might find that you either like the people or don't. Flying w/ people who either hate Helis is no fun at all.
