heliraptor,my goal is to be a competition level 3d pilot,so that alone says what my thoughts toward 3d are,you need to ask yourself this,"what seperates the stick banger wannabe's from the pros?" 3 things, precision, control, and smoothness. you need to look at the big picture, many people just starting out and want to do 3d look at the freestyle vids and think thats all there is,they dont consider the set manuvers, which are 2/3 of the judging.and the set manuvers are all about precision, and control.
if you can do 3d on the sim but cant hover nose in on a real heli, you are putting the horse before the cart.thats just using the sim as a video game not as a training tool.the way I use the sim(as told to me by a few pro's)is you should be working on your current goal, your next goal and the "on deck" goal.if you can do crazy stuff on the sim and havent mastered flips and inverted hovering(or even side and nose in upright hovers),you are wasting your time, its not helping you as much as it could
I was also told by Alan Szabo and Bobby Watts who I have stood next to while they were flying and spoke with them both for a good while,a few things BOTH of them said, were, the most important thing to learn is hovers, upright and inverted, and they also both said one of the biggest mistakes new guys make is using speed and altitude to make up for skill, every manuver should be able to be performed slow and with complete control
you can do as you like,I'm only saying this to try to help, and everybody is entitled to their opinion and way of doing things,as this hobby is all about fun and doing what you want, but if you really want to be a good 3d pilot, what I am trying to tell you is a proven method of success, taking short cuts almost never works, and history has definately proven this.
this is not about wether 3D is cool or not, this is about becomming a great 3d pilot fast, safe, and with the fewest crashes possible
you may be able to get away with FF not having the hovers down pat,but I just got into funnels this summer, and there is no way you will be able to do funnels without having side and nose in hovers completely learned so eventually you will need them, they are the building blocks for all other manuvers, its really hard to build a nice house on a bad foundation
please dont think I'm picking on you or being a d$#ckhead, you really do have good basic skills, and I'm just trying to point you in the right direction,as it seems you are skipping a few of the important steps along the way
