2oldy,

I have an HBK2, its TINY. At two mistakes high I can't see it anymore

Darn, I need big ship! Although the thought of trying a new move on a T500 in my backyard is distrubing in a different way.

If I have your backyard placed, You don't have enough room to do a proper turn around.

However, you COULD do limited stuff at home,

I would fly at your local ball diamond.

It is true, the 500 flies more like the 600 than the 450.

BUY IT!

I flew same routines today.

Funny how some would say:

"Push it" or "Go for it"

Others say:

"Don't push it" or "Be patient"

As I said in another topic, chip away at your personal walls - don't try to crash through like Iron Man on a mission.

Now, sometimes you can succeed with over-zealousness. We've all seen vids or heard or read stories about the guy who was going inverted and doing tic-tocs and rainbows after a month with a heli. And then crashed the first time it spun around nose-in.

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

New motors for my 4#3 arrived today.
I'd put one in and fly it, but I don't want to know what I need to buy next. Seems to be a never ending situation with that heli.

I need a better indoor flier.
To bad one of the "real" heli makers doesn't make one in that size.

Good point about the two mistakes high. Especially with an HBK2, stuff happens fast with those.

No offense Greg, but I'm not sure I'd put a 500 in your back yard. It would feel like hovering your HBK2 in the garage.
Except, If the sims are any indication, I know you'd really like the feel of a 500. Jump on your sim and try a T-Rex 500. They're nothing like a 450 at all.

Well, I've been doing figure eights in the garage with the HBK2, so the backyard should be no problem with T500 But then again its probably like having a Ferrari on residential streets. Not really all that fun, or safe.

The T500 in Pheonix is very nice. Surprisingly snappy for such large heli. I'll be spending some more time with while I wait for my parts to arrive. I put the spindle in tonight and didn't find any more damage. The main shaft wasn't bent, but I'm replacing it anyway. All screw holes were enlarged and it was bear to get the head and bearings off. I could file them down, but that much force can't be good for the metal. Plus the shaft has over 442 flights on it so I'd don't mind retiring it. I'll keep it as just-in-case spare.

Oh, and just for fun, I also ordered the 43t pulley just to see what all whoopla is about.

Good luck with all of that. With that many flights on the shaft, it's probably time to retire it.

So, to make a short story long about my evening...

I put the new main motor in my 4#3 tonight, and took it for a spin.
At some point, Walkera changed the motors that they're supplying for the 4#3. It's now what they call the "Tall Can" motor. It looks a lot like the motor for the 4#3 v2. On the v2, they put on larger main blades, and reduced the gearing (larger blades (both longer, and wider), and lower head speed in an effort to make it more stable). They coupled this with a larger motor, hoping to prolong the notorious short motor life spans. Well the tall can motors I got for the v1 had the v1 gearing. So it looks like the stronger v2 motor, with the v1 pinion. The result:

DANG I LIKE THAT MOTOR!!
The old ones were torky.. The power band started at the higher rpms, so you had to spool it up more to lift off, and it was always kind of a "jerk it into the air" feeling.

This one is much smoother on the power band. Liftoffs are now a smooth event, and it hovers ever so much better. I found it much easier to hold in the air now with this new motor. Oh, and it has lots more punch out power than it did before too. I was concerned about putting this new motor in, but I have to say that the overall result is very positive. It's a much smoother flying heli now.

The end result was: On my second battery, I was, for the first time ever with this little heli, able to keep it in a (mostly) controlled hover throughout an entire battery!!
Big occasion for this lil heli, I've neer managed anything more than 1 minute before, with most "flights" averaging 30 seconds.

I was having so much fun that I burned straight through 4 batteries without taking a break! The batteries are only $5.00, so I have a few.
Then.. I realized that the 4th straight flight was nearly a disaster. I was all over the place, and barely holding onto it. I had to put it down several times in that flight. So I was def. getting tired after 4 straight batteries. (well, 4 straight batteries, and only 2-1/2 hours of sleep last night - then worked all day - I'm kinda tired now).

But DANG it was fun seeing that little heli stay airborne that long at a time.
If I can keep it running for a few more sessions like that, I may actually start to work on transitioning to a little slow forward flight! (gasp.. say it isn't so!).

I'm lovin' this!

The 450 was/is to easy, this thing is a serious challenge.

2old,
have you seen the gaui 200?

http://www.helidirect.com/product_i...roducts_id=5303

There are two different ones.

Pretty awesome looking.

Though I haven't heard of anyone who's flown gaui.

I've been flying without my fins of recent,
tired of trying to prove something that has to be felt.

And now that I have a metal head,
and I have it all tuned out,
it is pretty stable without it.

I'm working my way to some 3d,
banging around and quickly changing directions,
doing some really high banked turns,
and coming around for slow circles that end in a nose in hover.

Just trying to get a solid sense for the helis weight and movements.

Also since I ditched the fins,
I put my head speeds back up,
and I like it a lot.

I know good advice when I ignore it ;)

Yeah, I've looked at the Gaui. and I've seen the writeups on the Align 250, and the other 200 class helis.
They are not "Living Room" fliers.
All are over twice the size of the 4#3, and are CP, with headspeeds that are far to high to be safely flown in crowded living rooms. Not to mention the expense of setting one of those up. By they time you have one flying, you've dropped $400+ into it. I can buy several 4#3's for that kind of money.

There are other 200-250 class CP helis around, and more coming out. But that's not what I'm looking for.

Besides, if I want that kind of flying, I have a 450 that is an excellent flier.

The 4#3 is a much smaller, fixed pitch heli, that is just a real challenge to fly. Once mastered, it is perfect for flying in the office, or taking off from the coffee table in the living room.
If dropped from about 3 or 4', onto a carpeted surface, it bounces harmlessly. You just set it back on its skids, and you're ready for another launch. It's just a nice, simple, small heli, that is fun to own, and fly. At this point I don't care about 3D, so why buy the complexity?

Unfortunately, Walkera is the only one that makes a heli in this class. (okay, there is one other, but it's 3 times the price, and not worth it - to me).

Besides, as they say: If you can fly a 4#3, you can fly anything!

Babby steps

I have not been flying much at all, summer is not kind to pool guys

So today I decided to take the mini to the park. Ran a battery thru her just ff and some eights. Went and did a small job and since I had another battery I said to myself stop by the park on the way home and stop being a woosie and try Nose in.

So I did, wasn't pretty at first and had to bail out wind kept pushing me around a bit but I did take her out turn her around and came straight at me slowed her down stopped her about 10 feet in front of me.

Enjoyed it and now that I'm past the oh **** it's pointing at me I can polish the skills up. For today I just kept taking it out and right back at me biggest problem i had was getting her whoa'd up into a hover

Did a few slow circles and called it a day

Heli looked a lot cooler looking at the nose instead of the tail

Thanks Brad it was the first time in forever I tried some thing I wasn't comfortable with

I guess Doug is right we need to keep testing ourselves. I had done it a buch on the simm but for some reason always froze when I wanted to do it in real life. Ya just have to say I'm gonna do it even if I crash and not care if ya do, I took that attitude and was not nervous and like every thing we do having tried it once now it doesn't seem so bad and I can progress.

I tend to get all wrapped up in making the heli fly good and be nice looking and forget to live on the edge now and then

Hope all is well with you and your family

take care

I think nose is the big one. Once you've gotten past that, the rest gets easier. I'm doing my nose in practice on my CX2. It seems to be working out well.

Flew the 4#3 today. Got 6 flights in "so far", but the day isn't over yet. I'll get a few more in yet.

I still feel like I'm chasing it around though.
The hover area is getting smaller, so I'm controlling it better, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm chasing it all the time. I can't imagine trying FF with it. I'm hoping that will go away with time.

I may drag the 450 outside in a little while though. I haven't flown it in a while, and it's over due for a flight. Compared to the 4#3 it practically flies itself.
