Thanks for clarifying that Brad, I thought you were being serious. Honestly, if I could be sure I could get to the field a couple times a week, I'd go nitro and get a 50. When you have a nice field and regular access to it, its a great combo.

But I don't see myself making it to the field every week and progress would be pretty darn slow if I only flew twice a month.

I plan to keep the skills up with the REX so the raptor should be a step down If I can only fly it once a week or less. Either way its freakin cool If I never fly it. (that wont happen) But a 50 whew that would be very very intimidating flying something that big.

i was scared to go nitro but i'm so glad i got the raptor. it's like apples and oranges though. the electrics are so zippy and fast. the 450 is like flying the raptor on steroids. i like them both equally for different reasons. i started with small electrics and when i got a 450 it was intimidating. i thought the same about the 50 but they're so cool to fly you forget about being intimidated after the first flight. it flys so much easier the larger you get. i'd heard this but it's true. now the 450 intimidates me more because it can all go wrong so much quicker.

Man you goto to have both Nitro and electric to fully appreciate this hobby.

I can fly my 450 anywhere but I fly the nitro on the weekends at my field.

It was my 450 that got me into FFF and doing circuits now I do it on the nitro

It's September won't be much longer

To me summer ends in September
at the most I may have 8 weeks left before it gets too cold
then its back to the sim

Not too bring anyone down but now is the time to get the most out of flying

hmm I may have to buy one of those TX mittens

I can always fly electric in the cold

I have flown my King at 25 degrees Fahrenheit not your kind of cold but very cold. Electrics run great but cheap woodies wont track.

It can get so cold here that even metal will snap under the right conditions.

I don't use woodies anymore since the last accident.
I know your not supposed to hold your heli in your hand but I was having tracking issues.
So while holding it I had a woody break at the root it almost ripped my hand off and it slammed my heli to the floor I had just finished rebuilding too

Carbons from now on just a safety thing for me

But ya time goes fast when were having fun

Flew early in the AM. Even with 3 cups of coffee, I was still groggy and my mind was wondering. I'm working on backward flight and should know better than to try new stuff when I'm not quite all there.

About 3 minutes into the flight I lost orientation and fell victim to a bad habit that I'm need to break. Because the air is so clean 1-4 feet off the ground that's where I usually fly. The higher I go, the more turbulance there is. The wind swirling over the fences creates unstable air above 8 feet.

Anyway, I lost control and instictively attempted to recover with the cyclic. I should have used the collective, or at least the throttle hold, bit didn't. The heli rolled quickly one way, too far, then the other way as I over corrected, all happening about 1 foot off the ground.

By the third over correction, the heli was too low and the blades hit the grass. I didn't think to hit T.hold until it was over and I heard the motor spinning.

Damage was the usual suspects plus two surprises. Both blades, the spindle, flybar, main gear and canopy. The main shaft is probably bent too. The frame was OK.

The first surprise was the almost new Extreme 400x motor. The shaft snapped right off. Not sure how that happened. I heard the shaft was weak and its true.

The second surprise was that all 3 servos lost thier gears. I had heard the DS285s have weak gears, but so far they've held up to a couple blade strikes. I ordered the metal gear upgrades which by far are the most expensive part of this crash.

In the next few days I expect to be going over the crash in my mind, and trying to figure out where I went wrong and what I could have done differently. The main thing I really need to work on is the altitude. With another 4 to 6 feet I'm pretty sure I could have saved it.

Thanks guys. All the parts have been ordered and I'll start work on the heli with the parts I have in stock tonight. Should be back in the air by the weekend, maybe sooner.

The after-crash rush, and frantic parts ordering have settled down and I've had time to think about how it happened.

I started backward flying training on Saturday. The way started was from tail in position, wag the tail back and forth, followed with some gradual cyclic to add some bank. I slowly worked it into a tail-in S shape move. Next I started at one end of the yard, and did the S shape back and forth while I walked backwards until I got to the other end of the yard. That kept me from having to bring he nose around while flying backwards. I would add that in later. For now, one thing at a time.

After a while, the S got wider and wider until it was a figure eight. Sort of sloppy and wide, but not deep. But it was there.

This morning I was working on the same process except that instead of tail-in, it was nose-in. I wagged the nose a couple time followed by a little cyclic input to bank. Opps, wrong direction on the cyclic. Less than 2ft off the ground and that's all it took. No time to recover.

Remember: Always fly 2 mistakes high. And when you're trying something new, make it 3.
