"that is the beautiful thing about this hobby, you can go to just about any field or funfly and someone will offer their hand to help."

So true. Part of the fun, believe it or not, is just hangin' out with the boys and talking about helis and everything else. Anyone with the answers to any questions you have would happily help you out.

Manny charging you for him to teach you, ESPECIALLY if you have a flying community close to you, is ridiculous.

I think all you need to do is like everyone else has already said: Hang out with local flyers, visit online forums for info, don't be afraid to by a book or vid and the simulator. It's not that hard to comprehend once you let it soak in.

$45 an hour! Yeah right!

I have to say from the UK point of view,

I have had a lot of lessons, purely cos i did not want to learn bad habits from club members..

I wanted to learn in a professional way and in a structure that i could follow...

In my club there are many good pilots but none i would say good enough to teach competition standard... most club flyers find it hard to keep their hellie still as they are all into 3D,

I wanted to learn away from the club in a school that would teach me discipline and focuses their 100% attention me at my convenience... and of course pay for the knowledge they pass on as well...

That is why i went to a school, it was my choice and i have to say it has paid off.

The guys in my club are a great bunch, they can fly very well, better than me @ 3D, but when it comes to the BMFA rules, the A and B tests, disciplined controlled smooth accurate flying that is where my schooling has paid off...

i am happy to pay 35.00 to learn, i have learnt comp flying, learn what the judges are after, and how to fly properly and accurately, and you will only get that from a comp flyer, and that knowledge does not come free and in my opinion shouldn't be free...

The guy i learn t with has won F3C comps and is in the British Team, and was the designer on a very successful new machine to hit the market.

It is also relaxing for me when flying a brand new model to hand over the responsibility on a buddy lead system to someone who is better than me, most club member wont take the responsibility..

For guidelines on becoming a good pilot, I would recomend going over the FAI F3C 2008 event maneuvers. This document outlines the 2008 event competition and maneuvers, but also talks about what they are and how they should be completed.

3D Pilots can do impressive things, but it is interesting to see how many 3D "stick bangers" wouldn't perform very well in various Schedule A routines.

Sometimes practicing these routines gets boring, and I think thats why many people don't seem to take it up as much... Yet, I think a skilled FAI F3C pilot really stands out in their flying ability.

RED and Droid

I agree, that is what i pay for, you can learn the 3D manvouers from a book or magazine, but to get someone who is top pilot with experience to demo them accurately to you and then break those maneuvers down into bite size chunks so you can build up to performing them with the same grace and accuracy yourself, is worth paying for in my opinion...

But i agree there are many pilots at the 3DM who have never had a lesson except the lesson of hard knocks and smashes,

I prefer a cheaper option, and as i have always said to my fellow club member,s he only has to take over once to save my machine and the lesson has paid for itself, even more so when it comes to a turbine...

Droid, have you been there then ?

Mr. (insert trainer of choice here), what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this post is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I work at Somerset Airport for NJSP. There is a 4H AMA Field in Bridgewater off of Milltown Rd. Shoot me a PM and we'll exchange numbers, another heli flyer at that field would be nice, they're mostly all plankers. Some are nice, but most of em don't take kindly to heli flyers, unless you show up alot. I guess I wore them down!

PS: I also fly at the airport on the glider runway when I don't feel like being bothered with waiting for flighttime. Plus, I can just walk over there with my stuff, its only about 100ft from my hangar

HeliguyNJ,

Kyle in Cherry Hill is a great guy, very knowledgeable and more then capable of showing you how to setup and fly properly.

If it's of any help, despite the distance, I'd be more then happy to assist you as well. However, I know Kyle is much closer.

You'd spend more then $45 worth in gas getting together with me though since I'm an hour+ away here in Eatontown, though I could meet you at a field mid-way if need be.

Wow

Folks,

I truly want to thank everyone who generously have offered their help in teaching me to fly. I can’t think of another hobby I've been involved in where so many have been so eager and willing to help. My sincere thanks!

Further, reading those threads about Manny have provided some pretty good entertainment over the last few hours! My wife is a psychologist, and while I won’t get into the specifics of what she thought when she read through his comments, suffice to say she was alarmed. Anyway, what I don’t want is for my first post on RR to turn into a “lets bash Manny” thread anymore than it seems to have… I just hope he really knows what he’s doing, so he doesn’t hurt himself or anyone else. Given the narcissistic nature of his website and his comments on this forum, I worry he may actually believe his own hype and cause an accident.

So, anyway…. Thanks again for all the replies. I’ve got some PM’s to reply to, and look forward to learning more and being part of this amazing community!

If old Manny would give me lessons with his heli on a buddy box for 45 bucks an hour I'd jerk the cord out and do a lawn dart from 500'

I'd even pay for the hour. Talk about cheap tuition and fun learning

I actually recall chatting with him some time ago, and he was a nice enough guy, but VERY full of himself. I found his arrogant manner a turn-off and decided not to join the club he's part of, or hire him to teach me.

Look for the following members - Floop and eHousetrex. Both guys are local and really good people. In fact, I bought my Trex 600 from Floop. I think very highly of both these guys and think they would be more than happy to help you out. I just got done a very big project at work that had me out of the country alot, and finally getting back to flying the sim. Good luck. This hobby is awesome, with some really good people more than happy to help you - AND not charge you $45.00 an hour to do so... Now, if I could just learn to freaking hover!!!

I know this post is wrong, but I have to give RR my findings.

Is Manny Lalo an alias? I think it is! I have uncovered the truth.

Manny Lalo is really Cesar Millan! Not only does Manny's reflexes school his students in 3D flying, but he can also train your dog!
