I completely agreen with Jim, I have ordered my second AVRO last week and a bunch of spare parts just in case. Always good to have at home

I have decided for AVRO because its the best heli I have had sofar (and the most beautifull) and it flies like I like it. Beside that good suport from the guys and help where ever needed!

Will stay with this brand for the moment, hope to see the flybarless and the 50 soon.

Will post shortly the setup of my new bird ...

Regards.. Dave

The outlay is not excessive as most of us have over the years increased their fleet to 4~6 helies.
If I would get into serious FAI, I would sell the whole fleet and do exactly the same.

Hey Jim,

Just came across your post here, looks like you are getting things well in-line for your new Lady.

About XPS...I have been flying XPS for almost a year now, in an X-Spec and a Caliber 90. I have never seen any issues with the system. It works at least as well, if not better, as any of my buddies' Spektrum systems. I am moving over to FASST now, with my recent radio upgrade to the 12FGH, but it's nothing against XPS.

You will want a lower gear ratio for the YS91. Most contest guys run them around 7.92 or 8. The reason is that the engine is quieter in the hover (presents better), and we run a high rpm in excess of 1900 upstairs.

I have been flying the new RT 720 Scot Grays this season, and like them a lot. Be sure to tune that engine well, as they are long and take some grunt to keep spinning at 1900 RPM at full pitch. They auto like a dream, though!

What class maneuvers will you be practicing?

Hope you can make the Nats,

Erich

Class practicing

Hello Erich,

Will I have been hovering around for some time and do a few pirouettes now and then. Not advanced stuff in the least.

I have put quite a lot of time on my phoenix sim this last year and I will do some buddy boxing to see just how good the correlation is between the sim and real flying. In the past this has worked out very well. So I have a lot of work ahead of me!

Some of the younger fliers at our club have done a good job using the sim as a good training tool so there is some reason for me to think I can do the same. The sim combined with buddy boxing I think will work well - If the technique just works well enough for me to break over from hovering to forward flight that will be enough for me to go forward.

Now picking the helicopter and equipment that I have would have been the same no matter what class I would be starting in - I am committing myself to go all the way and I want to fly the same heli and use the same engine - I want to learn all of my heli, engines, and radios inside out - Lets say to be One with my heli! When I sat down and told my wife what I was going to do she asked me if it would be better to use a cheaper heli at first then something like the Avro later - will I told her that if I was really just starting to fly then she would be right, But since I have been flying for awhile it is like Having one great woman and Staying with her, the longer I stay with one woman the better I know here every move and thought! Yea - She Liked that Answer! Will its true. And now I will have my Avro tomorrow!

I would like the make the NATS this summer, we'll see - even if I don't fly. Would give me a chance to scope out the Competition.

I will work on becoming a CD so I can try to get some F3C contest going out here on the west coast.

Thanks for the information on your experience with XPS - I fly Multiplex and I now have more confidence in converting my radio to 2.4GHz.

Happy Flying,
Cherokee Jim Mahoney

Jim, mine came yesterday and man do they pack these things. Opened the box and looked at the canopy, really nice with an inscribed line for the windshield and first canopy I've ever seen with the grommet holes already drilled. I don't have to look any further to tell this heli is going to be a first class. Now all I have to do is spend another thousand or so and I'll be in business.

Hey Buzz, thanks for the great service.

In my experience, not very. The more you start focusing on precision flight, the less help the simulator is for practice (at least in my opinion). No matter what you do, you'll never get the same sensory feedback on the sim. It's fine for getting your thumbs going the right direction when you're learning a new maneuver, but for precision?... just not the same. At least that's my experience.

I haven't used my simulator for practice in a couple of years now. The last time I used it seriously was to work out the cyclic differences in inverted hovering. For me, the only way to progress now is to fly my actual machine.

Sim and Real Practice!

Hello RChelicopterGuy,

I agree on the Precision Flight part but I do find that it is possible to cross tune real to sim and sim to real to get the flight-response dynamics as close as possible, it is helpful for me ---- And I need all the help I can get!

I talked to the Avro folks in the UK and they are going to work with Phoenix to put the Avro on to the Phoenix sim. right now I use the Vibe 90 on the sim, But I spend time on all of the models including making copies of different models with very different setups for getting practice with every possible case --- so what does the Vibe fly like at 13 pounds or 7 pounds, what does it fly like with very different control sensitivities --- these are all things that I like to try on a sim first.

At one time I set my controls using a lot of expo but the problem was the delay in response, for me anyway, and at last I found that about 10 to 15% EXPO and using about 70% on dual rates worked best on the Vibe, no more 40% expo!

Just checked FedEx Tracking, my Avro 90 is Out for Delivery!

Initial Look Over

Hello All,

After dinner I opened the Avro box or I should say boxes, a heavy outer, a single inter box, and at last the Kit Box. Very well packed!

The Manual is also very well written, and obviously by someone who has built a few helicopters. Now just because someone has built a bunch of helicopters does not automatically mean they build them in the right sequence, it just means they have built a lot of helicopters. The Art of writing a really good manual is not at all easy. To do it right the author must know the subject very well, must be able to organize the sequence of steps. Once the building steps are defined then the author would need to get the parts for a step and perform the operation again and again taking notes and then writing --- then give the parts to some bloke off the street and watching them to see how well they could perform the sequence. Going through the manual made me feel it was well thought out!

The parts are not only bagged but are put in a heat sealed sleeves - washers in one heat sealed compartment, the nuts in the next heat sealed compartment, ball bearings in the next heat sealed compartment, ... etc.

Real Labels are placed on each group of parts:

There is a table of contents at the front of the manual listing the order of building sequence steps, called Stages in this manaul - and the first 10 steps currently are:

Stage

1-1_______Clutch cooling fan
1-2_______Clutch bell assembly
1-3_______Clutch / crankshaft assembly
2-1_______Auto Hub
2-2_______Auto Hub / main gear
2-3_______Crown gear
2-4_______Crown gear / auto hub assembly
2-5_______Main mast / lower lower bearing housing
3-1_______19T pinion gear / drive pulley hub
3-2_______Drive pulley

As you might well guess Stage 1 group bag contains the parts for the three parts of stage, three heat sealed sections.

In the back of the manual is a Parts List which is organized by building stage just as the Table of Contents are, for example Stage 1:

Stage_____PART NUMBER______ITEM_______________KIT Qty

1___________AV-01-001_________Clutch___________________1
____________AV-01-002_________Cooling fan_______________1
____________AV-0312___________Skt head bolt_____________4
____________AV-03LN___________Nyloc nut________________4
____________AV-01-003_________Clutch bell________________1
____________AV-01-004_________Clutch liner_______________1
____________AV-122105_________Bearing_________________2
____________AV-01-005_________Lower collet______________1
____________AV-01-006_________Top collet________________1
____________AV-01-007_________Engine crankshaft nut_______1
____________AV-01-008_________L/H starter socket__________1

All of the extra lines were inserted because I can't use TABs or extra spaces to position text where I want it.

I think about the parts in order of building sequence then it is easy to find what you are looking for.

Blitz has taken a lot of care that parts are not damaged, e.g., the main shaft is enclosed in a type of thick expanding net to prevent damage.

See following post to learn of Old Mahoney's Mistake!!

There was one surprise, the tail boom Rear Boom Mount bolts onto the Main frame with just two bolts - all other tail boom mounts I have seen to date have four widely spaced mounting bolts. Since I see no problem listed on any forums and since Blitz has done a lot of testing then it must be OK but it is a surprise.

I may need to change the radio tray since I am using a 2.4GHz radio.

Mounting the servos is Not an after thought in the Avro 90! there support brackets, a bearing, servo output pinion, retaining plate, Eccentric cam, Grommet insert, grommet insert - buzz says you tighten the skt head bolts down, which you place a small drop of supper glue on the threads as it goes into the retaining plate. This is a Servo mounting system.

3mm Push rods!

Will enough for one day, I have a date!

OoopS! Boom Supports

Well it seems that this character Mahoney has made a Mistake!

On closer inspection - checking every part bag to the building stage in the manual old Mahoney discovered that the Boom Support is supported by two separate boom supports the Front Boom Support and the Rear Boom Support!

Hey Mahoney next time wear your glasses - have a good cup of coffee before starting a project ---- you can't afford to make mistakes once you start building this Baby!

Metal Servo Arms Included!

Hello All,

One more thing I won't have to buy!

Very heavy duty Servo Arms - they are included in the kit, both JR and Futaba! Very Nice!

Collets for both the OS and YS engines are also included.

Cup Washers are included, other kits these are option items, but Blitz knows that Carbon Fiber will compress so the heavy duty Cup Washers are performing a function here, not just for looks!

There is just no option stuff needed except may be the G10 radio tray replacement for those using 2.4GHz radios.

Second Avro 90

Hello All,

I will wait until I fly it - But I see a second Avro 90 in the near Future --- this is a helicopter I can Stay with! There is nothing I can see getting that would make me a better pilot, this heli has what what it takes. Only I can make me a better pilot --- and from what I have seen so far the Avro 90 will give me the confidance to move forward!
