Hi Jim,

The RT 720's are just that, 720mm long. That's a common size for 90-size engines.

I'll shoot you my thoughts about the rest.

Hi Jim

Just take XPS's advertisement with a pinch of salt.
Jim is known to heavily overstate his systems ability and better futures compared to others.
Just 2 examples:
He states other systems to have "line of sight" while his is up to 5 miles...rubbish.
He shows his to work down to 3.5Vdc while DSM2 just to 4.5Vdc...again rubbish. DSM2 goes all the way down to 3.5Vdc.

His system works just as good as the other larger Competitors but has it's little issues as do the others.

There are 2 major issues at this stage with the system.

1) So far nobody can proof his claim that his system will change frequency/channel if too much noise/interference is encountered.

2) It has been proven that his system can fall into a "Zombie" state if the TX is cycled a few times quickly.

Mind you there have just been a few recorded instances in thousands of hours of usage by who knows how many Users.
And to be fair, the other players have similar issues. 2.4G is still a fairly new system in regards to RC and all of them still have to ion out those odd bugs that happen once in a blue moon.

In regards to Rotortech main blades, the advice is correct as our FAI pilots over here use them as well.
All I am suggesting is that if you ever by chance get the opportunity to test the TG's, it would be worthwhile giving them a try.

My 680mm 220gr TG's give outstanding autorotation ability on an old X-Cell60 which is far heavier then my Fury Expert with 690mm V2's or my Stratus with 710mm CarbonTech's.
It's just another option to explore some time down the road.

Info - TG690's and XPS

Hello Alfred,

Thanks for the Info on the TG690's I am still looking for them, is there a link to TG's website? TG? Is this something from Taya?

On the XPS, since I am flying Multiplex I have no choice for 2.4GHz. Everything new has a learning curve and at times some rough roads to ride over ---- as long as it doesn't take my Avro 90 to the Happy Hunting Ground in the Sky!

I will put the XPS radio in my trusted Hawk at first. I do have a Spectrum 7 to compare against.

Simon form LittleRotors talked about some surprising results when going from 700+ rotors to I think 680s or 690s. I would guess there are a lot of factors involved - but them again that why this Hobby is so much Fun! Trying to learn whats what!

Thanks Again,

Happy Flying,

Simon is a sheep chaser from NZ who now works in Australia LOL.

You can get TG blades from "cyberheli"
Just go to the shop and when the Manufacturers icons pop up, click on Drehfluegel.

The most suitable blades would be:
TD7180 or TD7280 depending on your head rotation. 680mm 195gr.

The very best blades I ever tried on my X-Cell60 which now sports the OS70 engine are the: TD8210 690mm 195gr with S/Trapez airfoil.
These were able to give unbeaten autorotation reserves that no other blades ever came close. Still fully aerobatic and despite of what most would assume, they will not bob up and down any worse then a symmetrical blade during wind gusts.
But...
FAI has now introduced 3D style maneuvers and it would take more negative then positive pitch to hold the same altitude inverted.

Actually..I am going to order another set of the TD8210 as I used to love these blades, until an unfortunate mishap when my tailservo rotor disk decided to part company with the servo at 4 foot of the ground, leaving me with a rather fast spinning heli moving in one direction and too low to autorotate.

Simon Lockinton!

Hello Alferd,

Will I always wondered what old Simon does for a living when he's not working on his Great Web Site!

I will try the Rotor Techs for the YS91 and the TG blades for the YS61.

By the way does Right hand blades mean Clockwise rotation when viewed from the top?

Simon Lockington's FAI Preperation Process

Hello All,

A little off the subject but interesting.

While looking a Simon's Little Rotors I came across his article "Road to the Worlds", which is where we all want to go to!, gives a little insight to one man's preparation and training for F3C - Interesting bit on his 675mm main rotors and smaller SAB paddles. Does anyone else have experience with this type of setup? Simon seems to be saying that the Smaller Disk area being presented to wind results in heli Not being influenced as much by said wind. I'll have to email Simon and ask him how his autos are affected by the smaller disk area.

I do know an FAI Avro flyer, that uses a cut down set of NHP paddles. He has reduced them by about 10mm.

Interesting to hear of someone else doing that. After a good days flying today, it's exactly what I was thinking of trying next

I still find the model bobbing quite a bit in the wind

Had a good play around with D/R and Expo in Norm, and got it set a bit more to my liking. My throttle curves are spot on now as well

It was quite blustery today

Still good practise though

Hi Sean

I have never seen a hellie not bob in windy conditions, even when i judged one of the F3C comps a couple of years back, even the top FAI guys were bouncing a little, obviosuly no where near as much as i was when i was using my Fury with tempest FAI head.

I suppose the only thing you could do to give that extra stability in the hover is to add flybar weights if you havent already done...

But from experience i have found when adding flybar weights what you gain in the hover you loose in the aero's... it just seems always trying to reach a good balance..

After tinkering around with the Expo i am finding it ok now, and not bouncing around a lot, my head speed is 1450/1500 for more windier conditions.. but i have found the avro to be very stable after a few tweaks with expo and servo travel..

I am using SAB 690 symetricals, i found in the past using NHP's and TG even going up to 71cm blades they made the machine very bouncy and i lost the fast rolls.. ( that was on the venture) so i have always flown with SAB 690's..

i hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction before Gumley

Matt

I bought mymother in law a chair for xmas, but she would not plug it in.

How Much to Learn!

Hello All,

The easy part was to buy a very good Helicopter - Looking over the 2008 A & B Maneuver Schedule --- thats a lot of stuff to learn --- But how much fun its going to be! My estimate of Tens of thousands of hours may be a little short. I going to have to find a way to fly five days a week.

Avro On the Way!

I talked to Buzz at Motion Unlimited - My Avro 90 is on the way, FedEx tracking says it should be delivered this Friday!

I have two other helicopters to build first but I will check every part out and even hand fit everything on a practice run - why not just go ahead and build it? Will I want to wait until I have all the other parts at ready - Servos, Radio, Main & Tail Blades, Power System, etc. I am also waiting on my Macro Lens, I want to document the process as I build.

Probably 3D, I sent the extra money for the 3D set up but Buzz said he thinks these kits came with them.

Since all my helis are electric except for one, I hope I don't offend you guys by converting it to electric. That is if its feasible, may not be a place to put the packs.

Too Much Money --- Not All at Once!

Hello StanC,

That list is my Goal, not going to buy all at once. There will be a priority, some of which I can determine now and the rest will come with experience as I go along.

I am serious about what I am doing and that requires a little planing,
the question is what do other people do?

At some point I will determine that the Avro 90 was the correct choice - it fits my style - and then I will work on a second Avro as my backup. The spare parts are to protect my investment. Frames I am not worried about as I bought my son a CNC Milling Machine to help him start a business. One of the first things I will do is to make accurate drawings of the frames and other Carbon Fiber parts so that if I have to at some point I can make my own. I may also want to try Aluminum or 3/32" G10 frames.

Helicopters means many things to me - Hey the world is a helicopter!

Spare parts

Why not just have two identical flying machines, and a set of the most crucial spare parts in case you crash or parts wear out/fail?

Then you have one heli in the air, and a spare so will not be able to fly only if both helis are unservicable.

Sorry for the long note, I didn't have time to write a short one.
