RJX Hobby Hurrican 50 - Xtreme 50 > Is the G10 Version as rigid and light as CF version?

I have been eye balling the Xtreme for a while and going to put my tax return to good use. I noticed they have the G10 version + Pipe for 599. I was wondering if the G10 is as good?

Yes the G-10 will hold up quite nicely, and with the pipe it's a great deal.

I personally prefer G-10 to Carbon Fiber as I believe it is a better material for helicopter frames.

Structurally:

Structurally G-10 itself is a bit more flexible that CF. However, it builds into a very rigid box once the frame is built up. However, this quality of flexing is an asset when you have a crash as G-10 can flex more and possibly survive a crash whereas CF is brittle and could break.

Electrically:

G-10 is the same material as the motherboard in your computer. There is a good reason it is used in your computer - it does not conduct electricity, and does not provide a path for glitches. This is very important in the world of helicopters as we have so many electronics confined to such a small amount of real estate.

In addition to this, CF actually creates static when it vibrates against itself and when it vibrates against metal. Then, being conductive, it transmits this static to your electronics which can create glitches and all kinds of havic.

For these reasons G-10 is the frame material of choice for me!

Here is my new Xtreme in G-10:

The G10 is very rigid. I'd challenge you to take a G10 X50 and flex it. Mine is rock solid.

weight

the CF is lighter, but not by much at 6/10s of a oz. The CF is more ridge though and lets not forget adds alot of "Bling"

I prefer G-10 for the same reasons that Rock stated. With the proper use of frame crossmembers, G-10 can be just as stiff as CF when everything is put together. With the narrow design of the Xtreme 50's frame and the proper use of crossmembers and aluminum bearing blocks, it has a very solid structure. I cannot twist the frame by hand on the bench (unlike the 600N's G-10 frame that flexed quite a bit).

when I weighed the CF frame, and the G10 frame, they were just about exactly the same weight, so no real huge weight savings there. The CF frame is definately more rigid, however, the g10 is more than good enough with this frame design.

The CF looks great, but i do suggest use it with a 2.4ghz radio, and that goes with any Cf heli out there.

cheers

Thanks for your reply, I was wondering if you could answer a couple more questions:

1. Does the G10 Frames come with an aluminum or CF tailboom?

2. How does the canopy mount to the frame, IE rubber grommets or thumb screws?

3. Any upgrades needed while you are putting it together, or is it good right out of the box?

It comes with an aluminum tail boom.

It uses thumb screws (that are provided) through rubber grommets.

I don't think any are necessary, but the aluminum fan is nice and useful upgrade. It is also much easier to build it with the aluminum fan than have to do it later.

I got the Aluminum fan (I'll post a pic of that beautiful bad boy later) and the aluminum CCPM control arms (T-shaped arms).

In the kit, you have to build each control arm by gluing 2 identical G-10 (for G-10 kit)control arms together. Seemed like a good place for bling to me, and to make my life easier. Here's a picture:
