Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > Governor for a Wren turbine

Peter WalesKey Veteran - Location: Orlando Fl -
Nope, not the start of another argument or whining session.

Front end modified to accept Jetcat sensors

Back end fitted with jetcat rpm sensor on the fan

Cover chewed up some to clear the connectors

Video of it running is at

http://scalehelicopters.org/wrentest.wmv

The sound disappears as it seems the Wren sounds just like the sampling rate on my camera so it just whistles. I couldn't run it up as the fan I am using is out of a crashed heli and is bent so will cause major vibration problems.

Now I have to tidy everything up and then fit it into a Cuatro to see how it flies. So far, it's looking good, but somehow I dont think either Jetcat or Wren will officially approve. However, I have to say, the unofficial cooperation from both has been great.

I'm getting all excited

WHY? I have been whining about not having a governor on a Wren for years. So I decided to put one on there. If it works, Wrens turbine sales will increase, until Jetcat tells me they wont sell me any more electronics

Well as she has been singularly helpful, as usual I might add, and also her staff have helped with this experiment, I would be surprised if she had anything detrimental to say. I think she may use the information as a lever to prod her guys into getting one from her stable. However, its not finished and flying yet, so we are jumping the gun somewhat here.

The experiment continues.

Gentlemen,

I appear to have acquired a new title "The woman of the east" ... I suppose it make a change from "The wicked witch of the west" which is how some people seem to regard me.

Yes, I know what Peter is doing - he bought the engine direct from the factory and told me what he was planning, and I thank him for his credit card's contribution to keeping British engineering alive.

This is an interesting project. We have many more years experience in two-stage engines, but JetCat have excellent electronics. They have tremendous in-house expertise dating from long before they started making turbines (they were originally, and still are, a manufacturer of sophisticated medical equipment). We have to buy in our ECUs because we don't have the expertise in that area. It's not as simple as just hiring an electronics expert to make an ECU, it would have to be someone who really understands how turbine engines work and there aren't many people who have this level of ability. Gaspar Espiell does a good job for us and is a valued friend and colleague, but we know it's not the same as having someone in the factory doing the ECU work.

As for it spoiling AngloAmerican relationships, maybe not everyone realises that Peter is originally from the UK and has sensibly opted for much better weather. We have been exchanging emails for several years and I have received mails signed "from Peter in sunny Florida" on the nastiest British winter days - I really can't fault his decision to move.

Contrary to what some people seem to think, we try not to fight with JetCat - although our supporters seem to. OK, JetCat are our competitors. Yes, there were some major problems a few years ago over Simon Peckham and JetCat UK but they have now been resolved. Yes, I would rather people bought our engines than theirs. But being competitors doesn't mean that when I see Marcus Zipperer I punch him on the nose - we endeavour to be polite to each other. When I met Bob Wilcox at JetPower last September we had an amicable chat and he accepted a piece of my home-made cake - and it didn't poison him.

Wren are watching Peter's progress with interest.

Hey All,

An interesting idea, adding the electronics from another manufacturer to overcome a missing feature and will provide some nice feedback I am sure.

Some were doing it not to long ago with the kero-start if I recall correctly.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at JetCat's office if this really goes somewhere though

Of course we all know WREN Turbines are the best
LOL, sorry had to just say it.

Wish we had some of the US weather over here, Peter can you email us some?!

This is all fascinating. It's also one of the nice benefits of having someone like Peter in this hobby who has the time, cash and interest in trying things out like this that most of us would not for any number of reasons. Thanks for sharing, Peter.

Very well put ... I thank you also Peter ...,,, Sara .. and Bob

I had a sustuation a couple yrs ago that about tore the bird apart and I believe it was the fuel pump ...as a new one seemed to solve the problem at least for a few months ... and lately I heard of another such happening that did tear the bird apart in mid air . If it does nothing but govern the fuel pump it is worth it to me .

I also would not be able to suck that much air up and still get a start ... must be the Jetcat stuff on there doing that

Peter,

Modifications look good. I can't wait until you get it in a heli and fly it around. Do you know how much the cost will be to make all the mods?

You need the front end pickup from a V6 turbine, $135. Also the rpm sensor for the fan and maybe a fan as well, and here I guess about $100. Finally you need a V6 computer which I think is about $400, so it's not going to be a cheap conversion. However, you do not need the ECU from Wren so you can discount the cost of that, whatever it is.

I have now ordered a turbo prop system from Wren so I will see if I can convert that and then use it in my coax heli.

It's on and running. The turbine is in the Cuatro chassis, which wasn't easy. I have to make the links up for the rotor head and build the tail boom and tail rotor and it's ready for a test flight.
