Like I mentioned a while back, I have been planning to write up a how-to on setting up a HBK2 with a 6EX. Well since the weather sucks today I decided to get started. I plan to take a picture of each step and try to make it as thorough as possible. I would like you guys to look at it as I get it written and hopefully you can give me some ideas and suggestions. Thanks man. That was my parents cat Ginger. She is only part Maine Coon but she was a beauty. She had all the coloring but only weighted about 7lbs and was really small framed. Man I loved her eyes.

Booba is a nice looking cat too!

My cat Sookie is a shelter cat and she is very cute but not a beauty like Ginger.

If doug doesnt answer I think hes still using stock radios.

I believe Slider or Greggor is the DX man on my futaba I set Thold to 0 only to look at collective for benchtop setup but still dont trust it if you know what I mean.

I was actually landing the Mini on Phoenix Sim yesterday doing the auto test. It starts you out coming right at you and at whatever height you specify, I choose 40m, and then you have to keep the head speed and land it. It took me about 7 tries to land a Raptor 50 successfully and the only about 3 tries before I could land the Mini every time. I have to say, that was a fun exercise and one day I hope to try it for real

Norsman, setup throttle hold so it works. I use it after I turn on the radio I flip Thold then plug in the battery so ther is no accidental spool up while my body is next to the heli. I also use it when I'm done flying either to do a mini auto or again while I unplug the radio so ther is no accidental spool ups If you land in idle up as I do you hit t hold and let the heli spool down and you can flip out of idle up as the headspeed drops off....
Lear to use it. If the heli is going in and you can't stop it thold will save your electronics from frying from a crash....

I am trying to get it in a rough draft kind of form so I can work out some of the problems. I would like to have everything written down by tonight but we will see.

That looks pretty good. I wish I had that when I was setting mine up. You know whith the number of pepole that have tail setup issues, if you wanted to create a tail setup procedure (gyro generic one for Rate and HH) that would be cool too. Just a thought. I was playing around with mine last week had a blade strike and had to replace the feathering shaft and the main blades, and of course set it up again as needed. The most frustrating thing about the plastic head setup (for me) is the blade grip tension on the head..not too stiff, not to free... I like the setup they have with the CNC head (threads are on the inside of the shat and are allen heads. Sure would make it easier than cramming the 5.5 nut driver in the grip and trying to get it correct that way. I'm still using the plastic head, and have the CNC sitting in the "someday" pile. I must admit I gotta get out of the garage very soon, as trying to correct and fly for verification, that I'm running out of space easily. Thought I was making progress , when that bicycle tire of of the kid's bike reached up and bit my main blades....

Man this how-to is getting long and I am trying to be brief

JC: I plan on including the setup for a GY240 as that is what I have. That one will have several pics and I already know how I want to do it.

As for the rest, I do want to put more pictures in it but I am just not sure what will work. I thought about screwing up my setup and then showing a step by step adjustment to get it all level but I don't like that idea. I want the person doing it to actually understand what he is doing, not just copy mine. The only way he will get that is with trial and error.

Yea, aggreed. That is the better way of going about it. The biggest obstacle for the guy buying one I guess is realizing that the manual sucks. I've had to learn the stuff as doing it. Funny, after my last crash/blade strike it was like no big deal, get a set of blades, replace the shaft, balance the baldes, tracking ect. Kinda old hat, guess that's a good thing or bad depending on how you veiw it. Good because I knew what needed to be done, bad cause I've done it enough...

I have posted a general tail set up procedure several times........here it is for anyone thats interested


1 mount the gyro and servo according to the manufacturer and heli type...gyro plugs into ch 4, servo plugs into gyro,if you have a gyro sense lead for adjusting gain from the TX use the channel recommended by the MANUF...usually ch5 or the GEAR ch(spectrum)...we are going to assume the rest of the heli set up is complete and correct

2 determine servo direction....when you give RIGHT rudder(ch 4),the servo should move FORWARD or toward the FRONT of the HELI,or it should move the tail servo pushrod forward or to the front...if it is not....reverse the servo direction in your TX(CH 4)

3 DETERMINE GYRO DIRECTION.....with the heli armed, physically rotate the heli by hand COUNTER CLOCKWISE...the servo/pushrod should again move FORWARD or TO THE FRONT OF THE HELI..if it doesn't, switch the REV function ON THE GYRO(NOT the TX)...if the gyro doesn't have a REV function...you will have to flip it over and mount it upside down from the way it was originally mounted

turn off the heli and remove the tail pushrod from the servo end.remove all trim and subtrim on RUDDER ch(ch4)TRIM=0....turn the heli back on...once the tail servo has armed re-locate the servo horn so it is as close as possible to 90 deg from the boom...re secure the arm as colse to 90 deg as you can get

with the tail pitch arm at 90deg(0 pitch on tail blades)move the servo on the boom so the tail pushrod can be installed with the servo horn at 90deg and the tail pitch arm at 90deg

slide the servo forward to add a FEW degrees of pitch and tighten the servo just enough so it will hold position

with the gyro in RATE mode(set your gain to 50% in HH and about 70% in RATE)hover the heli....adjust the tail servo(slide for/aft on boom)till the heli hovers WITH NO STICK INPUT(rudder ch 4) and no drift...this may take many tries and 1 or 2 batts but take your time and get it RIGHT as this is the most important step...if the heli is drifting COUNTER CLOCKWISE in a hover MOVE THE SERVO FORWARD...if it is drifting CLOCKWISE...slide the servo back(slide the servo in SMALL increments,hover and test)...once the heli is hovering with NO DRIFT and NO RUDDER stick input...tighten the servo down

set the limits on your gyro so there is no binding in either direction...this varies a lot from gyro to gyro so I will not get into detail on this here....but the futaba 240/401 has a limit pot...adjust this so the servo has as much travel as possible without binding in EITHER direction...the hitec/logitec uses the rudder stick to set limits...see manual

if you are using an analog servo with a futaba gyro...you may need to adjust the DELAY setting to get optimal performance,.. if using a digital servo, delay=0

switch to HH mode and go fly....adjust gain to your preference and style....for newbies...increase gain till the tail "wags" rapidly back and forth(left /right)then back down till it stops

this is just a basic and "generic" set up procedure and will vary from heli to heli and gyro to gyro but it is a start......feel free to add anything I left out ,make comments or ask questions

I will do another post on setting up the G90/telebee/align/e-sky style gyro at a different time,for these you need to use trim
